WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY: REMEMBER THAT?

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

Wednesday’s are for random thoughts on this commentary so without further ado, here we go …

#1 – The NHL’s first Frozen Frenzy is being hailed as a success, with all 32 teams playing on the same day on Tuesday. The highlights? Vegas, Colorado and Boston all won to stay undefeated, while the Flames and Oilers both lost so cue the outrage in Wild Rose Country.

Also, interestingly, 10 road teams won in the 16 games. And Connor Bedard was held pointless, with a goal called back, in Chicago’s loss to the Bruins.

#2 – In my little slice of the NHL world, the Florida Panthers beat San Jose 3-1 here in Sunrise but it’s becoming a loud murmur: Matthew Tkachuk still hasn’t scored for Florida, six games in.

But it says here that doesn’t matter. The Panthers are 3-3, Chucky’s averaging an assist per game, and he had two helpers last night. They’re just as important as goals.

I blame the dads who used to give their kids five bucks per goal and two dollars per assist.

Remember that?

#3 – The Rider Nation is raging over the new contract given GM Jeremy O’Day this week, despite the franchise being in a clear tailspin. Even TSN analyst and Hall of Famer Milt Stegall chimed in, questioning the move.

If the Riders are truly back in the 90’s, which they are, I wonder if O’Day would do the honourable thing like then-GM Alan Ford did before the 1999 season?

Al said if the team doesn’t make the playoffs, he’ll resign. They didn’t, and he did.

I wonder if Jeremy has that in him.

And finally #4 – A source within Mosaic Stadium leaked that Henry Burris is a top candidate to become the next coach of the Riders. I ran with it, and Hank never denied it.

(Don’t forget who broke the story of Henry Burris joining the Jacksonville Jaguars staff last year. That’s right, yours truly).

If there’s one guy who can save that franchise both on and off the field, it’s the Smilin’ One.

Stop debating why Henry would want the job, after having a recent taste of coaching in the NFL or being on the TSN panel. You can never assume what someone else is thinking, nor what their motives are, so let’s just see where it goes. My guess is that it’s very attractive to Henry to run his own show and save another franchise, which he’s famously fond of doing.

Again, I wonder if O’Day has it in him.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Some people build things and leave legacies. Jeremy O’Day couldn’t build piles. As for Al Ford. He was at the helm for 10 years operating a shoe string budget and by that point I am guessing had complex ptsd.

That guy had to take the hits for working for people like Fred wagman, John lipp and Tom Sheppard. 10 years around toxicity like that is enough for anyone.

No Jeremy is able to somehow muster the strength to lower himself to a person like Craig Reynolds and then has the strength to carry home a six figure paycheck…..what a trooper.

O’Day and Reynolds should have both fell on their swords but instead they chose to keep their snouts in the trough.

that’s what I meant – hemoroids. Sit on his a$$ and literally watch back to back 7 game slides and then has the temerity to think it’s coaching. This is what gets me. He has the same record as Roy Shivers and they ran that guy out of town. What is even more bothersome is you have a guy working there now as this “Historian” who ran a Leader Post article calling the Shivers era “Mediocre”…..Roy had nothing when he arrived here. When Reynolds and O’Day were hired they were nothing more than a Bookkeeper/Secretary and an Office Boy. The… Read more »

And if anyone wants to really do some remembering about the 1990s. – that was an era where young men fell for batting eyelashes and those pigs are all in their late 40s and early 50s and good young men are now middle aged men picking up the pieces. We had horrific football in the 1990s and these glory days of remembering 1989 to 1992 are long gone and past that they never had a chance. Our heroes with the Jurasins, Aldags, Austin, etc, best they could muster was 9-9 and one year in 1993 upon which Don Mathews bolted… Read more »

Fact; we already have a loser football team with the Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club. Malaise NDP governing government? Not happening anytime soon.

…..losers stay losers and they always look for someone to validate their anger and resentment. The NDP has been doing that since 1944 with 30% of the vote.

Right now the NDP is so upset over seniors getting booted out of care homes….I always say when it comes to senior/elder abuse, overdoses, homelessness, incarceration…how do you know if you intervene you’re not messing with these people’s Karma?

Dear Santa, all I want for Xmas is a qualified GM for my football team so I can start going back to Rider games once again. I had 6 season tickets a few years ago, but I refuse to go now and support this garbage. If you can’t give me a new GM Santa could I please get a big piggy bank for all the money I’ll be saving for three more years?

As for Reynold’s keeping his job. People should be directing these questions to the board of Directors Chair: Dave Pettigew, Vice Chair: Douglas Hodson, Greg Yuel, Rod Vanderhooft, Rhonda Ekstrom, Terri Harris-Strunk, Mackenize Kilshaw, Blair Ross, Regan Exner, Edmund Bellegarde and Susan Flett these 11 board members are the ones that keep renewing Reynolds contract or giving him a vote of confidence. The 22-23 Football Operations Expenses were over $13 million and Administration is 3.5 million. The CFL operations cap is 2.5 million. That is over $14 million going somwhere? No one is asking this question on what are the… Read more »

I have to laugh at Reynolds during his interview on Monday. He said the exact same thing as last year – he said he takes full responsibility and the record falls on his shoulders. Then he says he gaurantees they will be better next year. He must have run his tape from his interview last year!!!!!!! That guy during the interview sounded like he was talking from a script written for him, 0 heart into what he was saying. I cannot believe the board kept this idiot around. He knows nothing about football – 0, Getting a new coaching staff… Read more »
