Wednesday Commentary: Scout’s Honour

It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday on this Commentary. Here we go!

#1 – Boy did they ever do it up right. The 2nd annual Western Canada Pro Hockey Scouts Foundation Wall of Fame induction went last night in Okotoks and I was honored to accept my dad’s (Jim Pedersen) induction six years after his passing.

Mannnn do they love hockey in Alberta. TSN’s Craig Button addressed the crowd, former Jets & Leafs Voice Dennis Beyak was the MC and the featured event was a Hot Stove with all six NHL Sutter brothers.

#2 – One of the highlights was our live show from the Sheraton Cavalier Calgary where the Foundation offered tons of guests and that included Ron “Chief” Delorme, the Vancouver Canucks great from Cochin, SK.

He talked of playing with Swift Current and being part of that beyond legendary brawl against the Pats and their fans in 1974 in old Exhibition Stadium.

Ron maintains the brawl was started by racist comments from Pats fans and said it was teammate Tiger Williams who said, “Don’t get mad Ron. Beat ‘em on the scoreboard.”

Imagine that: Tiger Williams trying to prevent violence!

#3 – Multiple times somebody asked me if I’m worried for the future of the CFL. This came from hockey people, but also hotel staff and folks around Okotoks.

I didn’t know what to say, so didn’t answer anything. Is it okay to say “the CFL can’t be killed?” It’s survived every attack in its 100-plus years but the decision not to play during the 2020 season may have inflicted irreparable damage.

I dunno the answer.
