Wednesday Commentary: That’s Incredible

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
One of my favourite TV shows as a kid was a program called That’s Incredible, hosted by Minnesota Vikings great Fran Tarkenton and airing on ABC from 1980 to ’84. (Feel free to look it up).
On the show, contestants performed an array of wild and sometimes dangerous stunts like sword-juggling or fire-breathing. Spellbinding stuff.
The words “That’s incredible” came to mind this morning while recounting what went on last night in sports, and reading up more on it.
For instance here in Miami, I watched in person as man-child Shohei Ohtani launched a 403-foot home run into the right field upper deck at LoanDepot Park as his L.A. Dodgers lost 5-4 in 10 innings to the Marlins.
The outcome of the game was immaterial. We went to watch the greatest thing in baseball since Babe Ruth and clearly, he didn’t disappoint. He is a 6’4″ MONSTER. That’s incredible!
And then there’s the Edmonton Oilers. They grabbed Game 1 of their second round series with Vegas, beating the Golden Knights 4-2 in the Fortress.
If that wasn’t enough, the Oilers became the first team in NHL history to record five straight comeback victories in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
And if you check the latest odds, Edmonton remains Canada’s best hope to win the Stanley Cup at BetMGM. The Leafs are next, followed by Winnipeg.
And they’re doing it with a back-up goaltender!
Even Fran Tarkenton would be impressed by the latest stat achieved by Edmonton #2 goalie Calvin Pickard.
He’s the first Oilers goalie to go 5-0 in the playoffs since Grant Fuhr in 1985.
Oh, and the Oilers are also the oldest team in these Stanley Cup Playoffs. They began the year that way.
That’s incredible, indeed.
