Wednesday Commentary: The Calm Before The Storm
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday! Here we go:
#1 – If that was the biggest mens soccer game in Canadian history, it sure turned out to be quite a dud didn’t it?
Argentina blanked Canada 2-0 at MetLife Stadium and players were flopping all over the place from both teams. They spent more time on the grass than Willie Nelson!
I keep giving soccer a try but it keeps losing me.
I’ll continue to follow it as host of a sports show, but I can’t see myself ever being a diehard.
#2 – Week 6 in the CFL kicks off on Thursday. The games this week are Toronto (2-2) at Montreal (5-0), Calgary (2-2) at Winnipeg (1-4), Saskatchewan (4-0) at BC (4-1) and Ottawa (2-2) at Edmonton (0-4).
My winners are the Alouettes, Blue Bombers, Lions and Elkimos.
As a contrast to soccer, I can’t see myself ever not following the CFL very closely.
#3 – My focus, as of today, is the Western Canadian Baseball League and all the exciting things we’ve got going on this summer.
The All Stars for next week’s All Star Game and Homerun Derby in Okotoks will be announced on Thursday and there are five Moose Jaw Millers heading to Seaman Stadium for the festivities. The RP Show is headed there too as part of a lucrative sponsorship deal!
And the Millers visit the Regina Red Sox tonight in the latest match of a rivalry that’s rekindling nicely.
It’ll be sunny and roughly 30 degrees Celsius/90 above Fahrenheit at Currie Field so you won’t get a better night than this!
And #4 – Got an email from my USA Today newspaper subscription informing us that NFL training camps open in just over 10 days. The first preseason game – the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH – is August 1 featuring the Texans and Bears.
That email was exciting but also a little intimidating. You can call this the “calm before the storm” because once the NFL gets going, there’s little room for anything else on the sports landscape.
And that’s just fine by me.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 5 pm ET on Game+TV, WQEE Radio, Podcast & YouTube Live)
