WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – THE GOOD, THE GREAT & THE UGLY
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER EDITION OF THE GOOD, THE GREAT AND THE UGLY.
FIRST, THE GOOD. CONNOR MCDAVID SNAPPED A 6-GAME GOAL-LESS DROUGHT AND THE EDMONTON OILERS BEAT THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS 3-2 IN OVERTIME ON TUESDAY.
IT WAS EDMONTON’S FIRST BACK-TO-BACK WIN IN WELL OVER A MONTH AND ISN’T IT ODD THAT CONNOR’S 6-GAME DROUGHT ALMOST TOTALLY COINCIDED WITH THE OILERS’ 7-GAME LOSING STREAK?
HERE’S HOPING BOTH ARE OVER FOR GOOD, BECAUSE I REALLY DO LIKE EDMONTON AND WANT TO SEE THEM HAVE A GREAT PLAYOFF.
NEXT, THE GREAT. THAT HAS TO BE MICHAEL REILLY. THE STAR QUARTERBACK ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE CFL AFTER 11 SEASONS ON MONDAY AND IT SOUNDS LIKE HE’S GOING IN TO BE A FIREFIGHTER IN HIS HOME STATE OF WASHINGTON.
HE’S ONE OF THE PLAYERS WHO MAKES THE CFL GREAT. I DON’T KNOW IF HE’S HALL OF FAME-WORTHY OR NOT, BUT IT’S BEEN A HECKUVA DEBATE.
AND FINALLY, THE UGLY. AND THAT’S THE NEGATIVITY AROUND TODAY’S BELL LET’S TALK DAY.
THE MEDIA & PHONE CORPORATE GIANT STARTED THIS INITIATIVE A FEW YEARS AGO AND HAS RAISED UMPTEEN MILLION DOLLARS FOR MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH AND SUPPORT.
THE NAYSAYERS SAY BELL HAS INFLICTED WAVES OF MENTAL HEALTH ANGUISH AMONGST ITS STAFF WITH LAYOFFS AND ABUSE BUT I’VE GOT NEWS FOR YOU: THAT’S BROADCASTING, NOT BELL.
FOR YEARS IN MY OLD JOB I WAS TOLD I WAS LUCKY TO JUST HAVE THE JOB, AND I’D BE NOTHING WITHOUT CKRM AND THE ROUGHRIDERS. I WAS TOLD IT SO OFTEN THAT I ACTUALLY STARTED TO BELIEVE IT. THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH BELL. IT’S ALSO WHY I HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN GOING BACK, AND IT MAKES WHAT I’M DOING NOW SO RICHLY SATISFYING.
THE ONLY BEEF I’VE HAD WITH THE PROMOTION IS THAT MENTAL HEALTH AND “RECOVERY” ARE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE WORKED ON 365 DAYS PER YEAR, NOT JUST ONE.
HOWEVER NOBODY ELSE IS TALKING ABOUT, NOR RAISING MILLIONS.
SO I ENCOURAGE YOU TO USE THE HASHTAG #BELLLETSTALK

“FOR YEARS IN MY OLD JOB I WAS TOLD I WAS LUCKY TO JUST HAVE THE JOB, AND I’D BE NOTHING WITHOUT CKRM AND THE ROUGHRIDERS. I WAS TOLD IT SO OFTEN THAT I ACTUALLY STARTED TO BELIEVE IT. THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH BELL.”…….You’re right, and this statement can be said at the majority of all business. Something needs to change…but it won’t.
Nothing changes if nothing changes. Generation x we shook in our boots when these garden variety sociopathic managers would “threaten”. Let them do it. Life gets better when you set the terms and standards for what you will and will not put up with. Aaron Tippett sang it best, “roll out the sack/head on down to the mill/give ’em all I got for i got for 8 ’cause thats the deal” A company owes you agreed upon wages, safety, and that is it p.e.r.i.o.d. And flip the script – they are lucky to have YOU!. Bell, govt, and business can… Read more »
I remember the talk in Regina a few years ago on whether or not Kevin Glenn should be in the HOF. No hesitation when it came to Darian – automatic, no? Glenn nonetheless has 20,000+ more passing yds then DD so yes. So – Michael Reilly – same # of Cups, higher on the career passing list than DD, 1 of 4 QB’s with 3 season over 5000 yds. I think DD should be in the HOF, no question, despite his below .500 win % as a starter. But if he is, Reilly should be automatic. And Glenn also should… Read more »
You couldn’t be more wrong. First off Kevin Glenn is the greatest QB inside the 20 to 20 yard lines. If you can dig up footage of him ever leading a drive downfield to win a game please share it. If there is HOF for a known “insurance policy” hey have at it. Also leadership….find me a quote anywhere from anybody that says they would follow this guy through Hell in Gasoline suits. Darian Durant – I called into Sportscage in November 2013 and said emphatically he is the greatest QB in the history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders franchise. I… Read more »
Rod – Fair enough but just because that’s ‘broadcasting’ doesn’t mean Bell needs to also engage in it. They took $122m in pandemic subsidies, increased dividends to shareholders, and then two days after their mental health day they axed 200 people. I find what they do to be disgusting. They take a cause that all of us recognize is crucial to address and they use it to self promote their brand all the while not at all practicing what they preach. If inflicting mental anguish is broadcasting and can’t be helped…then Bell should get out of broadcasting if they truly… Read more »
