WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – W.W.W.D.

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

The inclination is to look ahead, and that’s great because there’s lots to look forward to, but first some things need to be put to bed.

For starters, the immediate future of Connor Bedard is one. His junior hockey career officially ended Monday night with the Pats’ Game 7 loss at Saskatoon and by now he’s likely already back home in North Vancouver.

When will he ever touch down in the Queen City again? Your guess is as good as mine. But at least he doesn’t have to worry about people hiding in his bushes anymore.

What’s next? That’s also an unknown. A Bedard family source tells me that the first item on the agenda is rest. Connor’s been going hard since mid-July and since then he’s played in two World Junior tournaments and had a record-setting season with the Pats.

And on the seventh day, He rested.

There’s been talk in some circles of Bedard suiting up for Canada at this spring’s annual World Hockey Championship but that same source told me as of Tuesday, no invitation has been extended from Hockey Canada.

Personally, I just want what’s best for the young man and that should be spending time with this B.C. friends and relaxing. It’s going to get wild from here and hopefully the next time we see him is the NHL Draft in June in Nashville. We’ll see, but this is a story we’re following closely.

And now to look ahead! This is going to be an exceptionally fun spring. This appears to be the most exciting, and mature, Blue Jays team we’ve seen in years and Canada’s following every game. They set a franchise record with five homeruns in a home-opener, beating Detroit 9-3 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile did you see the shenanigans that went on in Minnesota last night when the Winnipeg Jets clinched a playoff berth with a 6-2 thumping of the Wild? The coaches almost fought!

Tensions are on the rise and that’s a sure sign the playoffs are right around the corner.

Meanwhile in Calgary we’re not even into the off-season yet (tonight’s the last game of the Flames season) and I’m already sick of the speculation over whether they’ll keep Darryl Sutter or not next season. But that’s what the fans are into.

And we’re almost exactly one month away from the start of CFL training camps.

Tell me, what would we do without sports?

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

The Winnipeg/Minnesota game was “old time hockey” with a modern twist. First I have always had respect for Rick Bowness. You don’t last that long through the eras, and he’s in the right place at the right time. Winnipeg is St.Louis 2.0. Ray Ferraro had the statement of the year. “it’s now a man’s game.” – so take all the female hockey b.s, wnba, etc, etc, woke crap and embrace the fact it is and always will be a man’s world. The NHL first round is war of attrition. The Jets have what it takes. Since you had Tim Hunter… Read more »

This is the most disappointing Flames season I can remember. Sutter has to go, the game has passed him by!

Remove 1986, 1989 and 2004 from their history and you still have over 40 seasons to pick from.
