WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY: WHAT NOW
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
It’s time for Canada’s favourite game show: The Good, The Great & The Ugly!
First, the good: You know what? It was good that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed Bo Levi Mitchell to a 3-year contract on Tuesday, at a rumoured $500,000 per season.
It’s good that the speculation can end about Bo’s future. Did the Riders ever seriously have plans about making Bo an offer to sign in Sask this winter?
Gosh, I hope not because it was never gonna happen.
But the pickings are getting thin at available quarterbacks to guide Canada’s Team now and into the future.
But we’re not here to pile on. The word I keep getting out of Riderville is that the Board is assuring people they’re “going in the right direction.”
I’d say they’re going in a direction, but I don’t see a lot of proof that it’s good.
Next, the great: Tonight is the annual CHL Top Prospects game in Langley, BC and the rosters are sprinkled with Sask WHL stars including the Pats’ Connor Bedard and the Warriors’ Braden Yager and Jackson Unger.
This is a novelty item, an All Star Game, and one of the things that makes the CHL great.
When I was with the Pats we used to gather as a team at Boston Pizza East and watch this game together over pizza and coke.
Be sure to tune in! TSN has the broadcast.
And lastly, the ugly: Rick Tocchet won his Vancouver Canucks debut Tuesday night and soon we’ll all forget about the Bruce Boudreau mess.
What’s worth watching now is what’s going on in Calgary between Darryl Sutter, the media and fans.
The team’s in a playoff spot and their best games are ahead of them but for some reason there’s a growing anti-Sutter sentiment in Cowtown, and I’m told it’s being flamed by the media.
Folks, he was named NHL Coach of the Year JUST LAST YEAR!
All Darryl’s gotta do is win. If only it was that easy.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, YouTube Live and WQEE Radio)
Darryl has 1 to 2 year lifespafe before the players tune him out. The way he’s treating Pelletier is shameful. Why disrespect your top prospect? What does that prove?
It really comes down to this being generational situation. For those people that remember when all the Sutters played in the NHL or coached/played we understand this. Those guys would die on the ice. This new snow flake generation has absolutley zero clue. – I see a Head Coach using a 1990s/2000s approach and to relate it this way. The Sutters are farm kids. – farm kids today would not have a single clue how to change oil in the Tractor let alone do anything manual as it’s all automated and more or less a rich man’s game now. The… Read more »
What now? Well this board made up of Regina’s most prominent social gadflies has now reached a time for choosing as Ronnie Reagan once said. This is now proof when you have lame ducks you can’t get players nor sign coaches. Someone needs to get ahold of Jeff Stuseck the former CEO of ISC, current U of R assistant coach, and he is also with Football Saskatchewan. That guy needs to be brought in as a “consultant” After that we now sit in winter. We get to camp and 5 weeks into the season it’s a house cleaning. Start working… Read more »
Weighing in on the QB situation in Riderville, would love to hear what Rod thinks on this one. The Riders have 2 choices, both of which are middle of the road QBs. Its either Fajardo or Dane Evans. That is all that is left to choose from. If you look at the QB statistics on both of them, Cody wins out. In fact, Cody had great stats last year in spite of his OCoordinator being a doufus and stubborn and having no protection. Too bad the Riders hierarchy did what they did to Fajardo and stiffed him at the end… Read more »
Given an opportunity Matthew Schiltz can be better than both of those guys.
Schiltz has looked good when given the chance He is destined
for a career backup role and might want out. Depends a lot on what happens with Evans.
Forget about Evans , too much like Fjardo in so many ways. Now that Masoli is back in Ottawa go after Arbuckle he is much better under pressure and with our O line there will be plenty.
I sure notice lots of teams are signing guys, good players too. The Riders are signing nobody, oooops sorry, I think they renewed the contract of Western Pizza at Mosaic. heeeeheeee
There hasn’t been any positive news on the Roughriders since they fired Jason Maas (18 games too late).
Are Craig Reynolds and Jeremy O’Day so confused that they think the Riders are in the Connor Bedard Sweepstakes?
