Wednesday Commentary: Why Not Us?

You have to love these Random Thoughts Wednesdays, right? I know I do.

#1 – Hail the Warriors! Moose Jaw is into the Western Hockey League Final after a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory at Saskatoon Tuesday night. 13,240 took in the game at SaskTel Centre.

Now they line up against Portland in their first trip to the Dub Final since 2006. Nobody expected the Winterhawks to make it this far either. That means the Warriors have just a good a chance as the ‘Hawks.

As Moose Jaw coach Mark O’Leary says, “Why not us?”

#2 – Had occasion to enjoy a good long phone chat with Lorne Molleken on Tuesday. “Mooner” and I chatted hockey, life, and went over notes for an upcoming sports banquet we plan to host together in Saskatchewan.

Lorne not only coached Chicago, Pittsburgh and San Jose, but is the only man to coach the Pats, Warriors and Blades. He also coached in Weyburn and Swift Current in Junior A, and played in PA.

Is there a better all-around hockey man from Sask than Lorne Molleken? Is he in any of these Hall of Fames?

#3 – For a 10,000th time, I loathe when sports crosses into news. But that was the case Tuesday when the CFL suspended Argos QB Chad Kelly for a half a season for his role in a sexual harassment situation with the team.

It’s all over the U.S. media today, as Kelly was a quarterback at Ole Miss and he had troubles there too. Plus he’s Jim Kelly’s nephew.

It appears some people will never, ever learn.

And #4 – The owners of that Boston Pizza in Penticton, BC we discussed here yesterday ended up changing their sign amid backlash for being pro-Oilers in advance of this series against Vancouver.

I got an on-the-spot report and although the owners aren’t doing any interviews, they’ve let it be known that they’re Edmonton-based and didn’t mean to start any controversy.

May the best team win.
