The Moose Jaw Miller Express are off to the Western Canadian Baseball League championship series after pulling off a remarkable 5-3 victory in Game 3 of the Best-of-3 East Division Final on Tuesday at a soldout Cairns Field in Saskatoon.

Westin Walz pitched a complete game for the Millers, striking out Berries slugger Carter Beck with the final out of the ballgame.

The Millers now face the Okotoks Dawgs in the Best-of-3 WCBL Final beginning Thursday at Seaman Stadium. Game 2 goes Friday at Ross Wells Park in Moose Jaw.

The Blue Jays scored three times in the first inning, got home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Junior and Spencer Horwitz, and starter Kevin Gausman pitched seven scoreless innings as Toronto beat the hosting Los Angeles Angels 6-1 on Tuesday. The Jays, who beat the Halos 4-2 on Monday, will be looking for a sweep when the teams wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday.

Quarterback Nathan Rourke is expected to take first-team snaps at the B-C Lions’ practice today and head coach Rick Campbell says he’s in the mix to start Sunday against the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Rourke rejoined the CFL team on a three-year contract yesterday. The 5-and-4 Lions have lost three straight games, while the Bombers are 3-and-6. Rourke was the CFL’s top Canadian in 2022 before leaving the Lions for the NFL.

  • The Buffalo Bills placed receiver Chase Claypool and third-string quarterback Shane Buechele on injured reserve on Tuesday and made several other moves to restock their injury-depleted roster. The Bills signed quarterback Ben DiNucci and receivers Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain, all to one-year contracts. Buffalo also released receiver Bryan Thompson. Claypool’s bid to revive his career with Buffalo appears over as a result of a toe injury that led to the fifth-year player missing a majority of training camp. The Bills signed Claypool in May after trading Stefon Diggs to Houston and losing Gabe Davis in free agency.
  • Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy has a torn meniscus in his right knee that will require surgery. He was hurt during his preseason debut when he went 11 for 17 for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Las Vegas. McCarthy reported persistent soreness to the team when players reconvened. The 10th overall pick in the draft was sent for further examination that revealed the injury. The rehabilitation for a full repair is much longer than if there’s just a partial tear and only a trim is needed. The severity won’t be known until the procedure takes place.
