WORLD JUNIORS

MONCTON, New Brunswick (AP) – Oliver Kapanen and Joakim Kemell each had a goal and an assist as Finland beat Slovakia 5-2 on Tuesday at the world junior hockey championship.

Jani Nyman also scored during Finland’s three-goal second period. Sami Paivarinta and Brad Lambert had the other goals for the Finns.

Jani Lampinen made 22 saves for Finland (1-0-1), a day after it lost 3-2 in overtime to underdog Switzerland.

Peter Repcik scored in the first and third periods in Slovakia’s first game of the tournament. Maxim Strbak assisted on both goals.

Patrik Andrisik started in net for Slovakia, stopping 11 of 15 shots in 33:56 of work. Matej Marinov turned aside 7 of 8 shots in relief.

SWEDEN 1, GERMANY 0

Carl Lindbom stopped all 28 shots he faced as Sweden blanked Germany to stretch its shutout streak to two games in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Adam Engstrom scored the only goal of the game in the dying seconds of the first period as Sweden (2-0-0) strengthened its hold on first in Group A.

Nikita Quapp turned aside 43 shots in net for Germany (0-1-0).

SWITZERLAND 3, LATVIA 2, SO

Switzerland scored the tying goal with under two minutes left in regulation, then outscored Latvia in the shootout in Moncton.

Robin Louis and Rodwin Dionicio scored for Switzerland, while Darels Dukurs and Dans Locmelis had goals for Latvia, which was outshot 29-18.

Switzerland (2-0-0) opened with a 3-2 overtime victory over Finland. Latvia (0-1-1) lost 5-2 to the United States in Monday’s opener.

CZECH REPUBLIC 9, AUSTRIA 0

Jiri Kulich scored three goals as the Czech Republic cruised past Austria 9-0 in Halifax.

Gabriel Szturc had a pair of goals, and Jakub Brabenec, Petr Hauser, Ales Cech and David Spacek each scored. Stanislav Svozil had three assists.

The Czechs led 3-0 after the first period and took a 7-0 lead into the third. The Czech Republic (2-0-0) knocked off Canada 5-2 on Monday. Austria (0-2-0) lost 11-0 to Sweden on Monday.

Goalie Tomas Suchanek recorded the shutout and had two assists.

 

WHL

SASKATOON – Vaughn Watterodt scored three goals, Austin Elliott only faced 16 shots and the Saskatoon Blades won their 25th game of the Western Hockey League season by beating the visiting Prince Albert Raiders 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Carter Anderson’s goal at 18:53 of the third period prevented Elliott from posting the shutout.

The Blades led 2-0 after the first period and took a 3-0 lead into the third. Saskatoon outshot Prince Albert 35-16.

The Raiders’ record slipped to 11-20-2.

REBELS 7 OIL KINGS 1

RED DEER, Alta. – Kai Uchacz scored three times and Christoffer Sedoff had three assists as the Red Deer Rebels overpowered the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-1.

Ollie Josephson, Matteo Fabrizi, Craig Armstrong and Carson Birnie also scored for the Rebels, who improved to 23-6-1.

Luke Robson scored for the Oil Kings (4-29-1) who were outshot 38-35.

HURRICANES 3 TIGERS 2

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Logan Wormald scored two goals, including the winner at 15:09 of the second period, as the Lethbridge Hurricanes edged the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-2.

Joe Arntsen also scored for the Hurricanes (20-13-0-1), who outshot the Tigers 25-17.

Brendan Lee and Owen MacNeil scored for the Tigers (13-18-4-1).

GIANTS 3 ROYALS 2

LANGLEY, B.C. – Ty Thorpe had a goal and assist as the Vancouver Giants won their 13th game of the season by edging the Victoria Royals 3-2.

Ty Halaburda and Jaden Lipinski also scored for the Giants (13-5-4-2). Riley Gannon and Alex Thacker scored third-period goals for the Royals (7-24-3-0), who outshot the hosts 36-19.

Giants netminder Jesper Vikman saved 34 of 36 shots.

BLAZERS 6 ROCKETS 4

KELOWNA, B.C. – Fraser Minten scored three goals and added an assist as the Kamloops Blazers defeated the Kelowna Rockets 6-4.

Daylan Kuefler, Matthew Seminoff and Connor Levis all scored once for Kamloops (19-6-3-2).

Blazers goaltender Dylan Ernst saved 21 of 25 shots.

Turner McMillen scored twice while Carson Golder and Andrew Cristall scored once for Kelowna (12-15-3-0).

Rockets netminder Talyn Boyko kicked out 38 of 43 shots.

AMERICANS 5 SILVERTIPS 2

KENNEWICK, Wash. – Parker Bell scored twice and Tyson Greenway had a goal and assist as the Tri-City Americans defeated the Everett Silvertips 5-2.

Jalen Luypen and Jordan Gavin also scored for the Americans (15-15-0-1).

Ryan Hofer and Niko Tsakumis scored for the Silvertips (16-15-1-0), who outshot the hosts 32-23.

THUNDERBIRDS 7 CHIEFS 5

SEATTLE, Wash. – Jared Davidson, Gracyn Sawchyn and Lucas Ciona each scored twice as the Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Spokane Chiefs 7-5.

Nico Myatovic also scored for the Thunderbirds (24-4-1-1), who outshot the Chiefs 32-29.

Raegan Wiles, Kooper Gizowski, Ty Cheveldayoff, Michael Cicek and Berkly Catton scored for the Chiefs (6-23-0-2). Wiles also chipped in with three assists.

NHL

William Nylander scored on a breakaway at 4:03 of overtime as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the host St. Louis Blues 5-4 on Tuesday. Justin Holl, Alexander Kerfoot, Calle Jarnkrok and John Tavares also scored for Toronto as the Leafs won their third straight game. Jordan Kyrou, Calle Rosen, Ryan O’Reilly and Justin Faulk scored for the Blues.

Jared Spurgeon, Mats Zuccarello and Frederick Gaudreau each had a goal and assist in the Minnesota Wild’s 4-1 victory Tuesday that handed the host Winnipeg Jets their first three-game losing streak of the N-H-L season. Samuel Walker also scored his first goal for the Wild, who are 7-and-1 in their past eight games. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for the Jets.

Antti Raanta made 24 saves for his first shutout since March and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 on Tuesday for their ninth consecutive N-H-L victory. Martin Necas, Jesper Fast and Jordan Martinook scored to help the Hurricanes extend their franchise-record points streak to 15 games. Raanta faced only seven shots in both the first and third periods.

Connor McDavid’s league-leading 31st goal to extend his point streak to 16 games was the winner on Tuesday as the visiting Edmonton Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 2-1. Tyson Barrie with his 100th career goal also scored for Edmonton. Mikael Backlund scored the lone goal for Calgary, which had its four-game NHL points streak snapped.

The Vancouver Canucks won their third game in a row on Tuesday by sinking the visiting San Jose Sharks 6-2. Bo Horvat scored twice and added two assists for Vancouver, while Elias Pettersson, Ilya Mikheyev, Brock Boeser and Quinn Hughes netted singles. Mikheyev also chipped in with three assists. Timo Meier scored twice for San Jose.
