WHEAT KINGS 8 PATS 1

Keith Hershmiller Photography

Regina, SK – The Regina Pats (31-28-3-4) concluded a four-game homestand in ugly fashion, losing 8-1 to the Brandon Wheat Kings (43-18-4-2) at the Brandt Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Game Story
The Regina Pats fell behind early to the East Division-leading Brandon Wheat Kings, spotting them a 3-0 lead after one period.  Brandon’s goals came from Jordan Thompson, Jayce Hawryluk and Ivan Provorov.  Pats Goaltender Tyler Brown lasted one period giving up three goals on nine shots.

The Pats turned to rookie goalie Jordan Hollett in period two.  Hollett did not fare much better surrendering Brandon goals to Reid Duke, Tim McGauley and Ivan Provorov to make it 6-0.  The Provorov goal came on the power-play, with Regina facing a two man advantage, as a result of a partial line brawl that saw the Pats’ James Hilsendager, and Brandon’s Shael Higson each receive a game misconduct.

Regina broke the shutout with a late goal in the third by Cole Sanford.  The Wheat Kings also added two more for the 8-1 victory.

– Adam Brooks now has points in 18 consecutive games with 38 points (8G, 30A).

What’s Next?
The Regina Pats hit the road for a quick trip down Highway One to Swift Current where they will take on Broncos in a Wednesday night match-up.  This is the first time since early February the Pats have more than one day off between games. The face-off is 7 p.m. from the Credit Union iPlex.  You can listen to the action on Bennett Dunlop Ford Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM with the pregame show getting underway at 6:35 p.m.

The Pats looked like a low end Tier 2 Jr team. At this late stage of the season they still don't have guys buying into the program? If the coaches can't get them to buy in they don't have a sniff. Either the players aren't good enough and coachable enough, or the coaches can't get through. Why is this defence so bad at this stage? It also shows that the Pats are far too small to compete in any prolonged playoff series. They lost every battle and are simply too physically inferior to do much.

Brooms in Brandon and Lethbridge await. It's a sweep in 4 games when they play the Pats. Another first round exit! Makes me want to renew my season tickets for next year. Yeah right !

Don't count on a sweep to the Hurricanes. That's a soft hockey team that hasn't any playoff experience on the team. If anything the Pats would definitely love to play Lethbridge.

It's not over till the fat lady sings. Bruce has your wife/boyfriend sung yet! Last night was not good at all however I still support the team. Leave your seats Bruce for true fans and have your wife sing elsewhere.

Why are the Wheat Kings good year after year? Why can't this be replicated in Regina? Regina has some nice pieces but Brandon is so deep. Every year I think "Ok Brandon went for it last year, traded away a lot of their young guys… they'll likely have to enter a bit of a re-build phase"… but thats never the case!!

It's the KELLY McCrimmon effect! You don't hang around Junior hockey for 35 years and fail. His depth is reflected in good annual scouting and drafting. He makes great trades that ALWAYS favour the Wheat Kings. And finally, he doesn't tolerate any bullshit with his players…play his way or you get shipped out in a trade. This is why Brandon is always near the top.
Oh yeah, he's got the referees pretty deep in his pocket too!

That was an ugly one. Not really surprised as Brandon outscored MJ 13-5 the past 2 games and then Saskatoon 12-2 earlier in the week. They are an elite team loaded with depth. I will still support the team and they will bounce back and be ready for the playoffs no matter who they face (hopefully not Brandon!!) Congrats to Brooks for keeping his streak alive and not giving Papirny the shutout. That was the only highlight of the night! Thanks to the organization for the final post-game skate. The kids sure enjoy being on the ice with their idols.… Read more »

Brandon has better players and coaching than they Pats, and it would be foolish to think otherwise. Pats talent has been vastly overrated and needs a serious upgrade and it's not just youth. #6 may be the worst 19 year old d-man in the WHL. Brandon didn't win just by talent alone as they outmuscled the Pats all game. They couldn't touch their size, strength, or work ethic. They won every single battle. Take a look at Patrick and Steel out there. Who would you have drafted? A 5'10" centre or a 6'3" scoring machine. Kelly knows what he's doing.… Read more »

Our defence is brutal and I don't see this team getting any better in the next 2 years for that reason I will not be renewing my season tickets of 26 years. I'm still upset about last years trades, and the fact they want my season ticket money by April 30th. The memorial cup isn't till May long weekend at least wait till the season ends.

Every good team in the league uses a strength coach….do the Pats? They seem to be physically inferior.

Pats will be bigger, stronger and better next year, building for the future is how Junior Hockey works. McCrimmon is able to put together teams that are bigger and stronger than division opponents. Never able to put together an elite team that can compete for the Memorial Cup, closest they got was when they hosted and got the loser pass to the tournament, losing a close 9-1 decision.

Won't be renewing our Pats seats after 39 years. Disgrace.

Yea agree Brandon has perenial good team but when have they last won a Mem Cup?Disgrace??? What are you talking about George. The hockey has been just as entertaining or maybe better since the new Owners came into effect. They said they are going to take the time to rebuild and I haven't seen any change in that direction. When did you ever hear "re-build" with the Parkers and obviously you stuck it out with them (for some reason). Why are you jumping ship now?I am not sure what some of you fans want. This is Junior hockey and inconsistency… Read more »

Well put Mr.Weppler you make intelligent points that reflect your understanding of Junior Hockey. For old George I expect he is celebrating his 39th year of not renewing his season tickets

Well said William Weppler! Your comments are always great!

It's been an inconsistent year this year but they're in the playoffs for the 3rd straight year and the hockey and the game day experience have been so much better since the new ownership! When we renew our seats we'll have to check out some of the new vacant spots and possibly upgrade with all these former, disgraced fans who are not renewing.

William Weppler you are the type of fan that has caused this franchise to be the perennial loser it is. You have no right to criticize George. You don't pay attention to any detail and are happy to go to a game, drink coffee with a bunch of other know littles and care little about the product on ice. Then you sit about and make up every excuse you can about the performance of the team. You pay little heed to the assessment and warnings that the coaches have been speaking about. Don't criticize Brandon because at least they get… Read more »
