WHEAT KINGS 8 PATS 3

BRANDON — The Regina Pats’ losing skid hit five games Saturday night with an 8-3 drubbing at the hands of the Conference-leading Wheat Kings at Westman Place.

The Pats built up a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Pavel Padakin and Rykr Cole however the Wheaties went on a 7-0 run to take complete control of the game over the final 30 minutes. They led 4-2 going to the third period and poured it on from there.

Regina’s leading-scorer Adam Brooks capped the scoring with 4:37 remaining. Pats goalie Daniel Wapple was lifted after allowing six goals on 43 shots. In relief, Tyler Brown stopped 10 of 12 Brandon shots.

The Wheat Kings outshot the Pats a whopping 55-27 including 20-6 in the third period. They were a devastating 3/4 on the powerplay while Regina was 0/3. The attendance was 3913 and they were an energic bunch led by CHL superfan Cameron Hughes.

On CKRM’s postgame show, Pats coach John Paddock said for the first half of the game he was pleased by the team’s effort however at times their youth was evident. He said their next task is keeping the club’s confidence up as they head out on the road for two more games in the Central Division next weekend.

Regina (26-17-5) visits the Kootenay Ice Friday at 8:00 on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 7:35 pm).

With all the trades and moves the Pats have made over the last few weeks, why would this result surprise anyone. There will be more nights like this until the end of this season.

This the result of getting too young too soon. Paddock needs to realize you need quality 19's to win in this league. We gave up too many home grown veterans far too soon.. We could easily turn into the Lethbridge Hurricanes. No leadership this season now that they're all gone. Not much coming back. Sadly we will probably need to trade for what we gave up. Rookie GM learning.

Lose a game 8-3 and the rats come out of the cracks. Keep Hunt, Gay and Burroughs and Regina would have lost 6-4 instead…

With all the Klimchuck/Gabrielle comparisons and contrasts in the storylines of last night's game, the one I found most interesting was the statistical comparison between the two through 104 WHL games played (last night was Gabrielle's 104th WHL game since joining the Wheat Kings as a 15 year old for good in the 2012-13 season. ) Gabrielle 104GP, 30G, 30A, 60pts, +5, 18 Fights, 180 PIM Klimchuck 104GP, 32G, 29A, 61pts, +0, 0 Fights, 39 PIM Almost identical offense at the same ages (Klimchuck is 1/4 year older) and on similar teams. Gabrielle played on worst team in Eastern Conference… Read more »

Gabrielle made his own bed holding out on the Wheat Kings after Xmas and his pro stock will suffer significantly. Why anyone would leave a top 10 team in Canada with an outside shot at the Mem Cup to try and dictate his junior career is beyond me.

He hasn't done a thing since he's been traded and will suffer as a 6th or 7th round pick instead of 2nd or 3rd. Tainted goods…he has made his road to the show way harder than it should be.

Playing for John Paddock in Regina will only help his stock. Good on him for playing through his inuries and he looked almost back to form this weekend. I would expect he will be a big factor for us the rest of the way and for the next couple of years as well.

Interesting that Regina has actually stretched their lead on Swift Current since the Klimchuck trade. 9 point lead on the day of the trade and 11 games later the lead has grown to 10 points.

Not smirking, because I love this team and hate to see a great season chucked down the toilet. Hate to say "I told you so" but…..
If the past roster had stayed together great things could have happened this winter.

How do know this Lee-Anne? A couple of key injuries would derail any season and that's a distinct possibility. The Pats did the prudent thing and you'll just have to wait for the 2016-17 season for those great things.

Pbb . Um no you go for it when you have the chance. They may not even have a good team in 2016 2017.
