WHEAT KINGS HEADED TO LEAGUE FINAL

WheatKings.com

BRANDON, Man. – The Brandon Wheat Kings are headed back to the Western Hockey League final.

Nolan Patrick had three goals and two assists as the Wheat Kings downed the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 on Friday in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final, taking the series 4-1.

Brandon also played for the Ed Chynoweth Cup last season but fell in four games to the Kelowna Rockets. The Wheat Kings will face the Seattle Thunderbirds this year after they eliminated the Rockets on Wednesday in the Western Conference final.

Brandon has gone 12-4 through three rounds while Seattle is 12-1, with its only loss coming in the second round against Everett. Dating back to the regular season, the red-hot Thunderbirds have won 25-of-27 games.

Game 1 goes next Friday in Brandon.

Kale Clague and John Quenneville also scored for the Wheat Kings, who got a 24-save outing from Jordan Papirny.

Jake DeBrusk and Evan Polei found the back of the net for the Rebels, who are the host team for the 2016 Memorial Cup which begins May 20.

Rylan Toth turned away 26-of-31 shots for Red Deer.

Both clubs went 0 for 4 on the power play.

there goes that evil handed Kelly McCrimmon winning again. Wish we had a little more evil in our hockey team.

Next year though right.

The Wheatkings are unbeatable at this point. They are the class of the WHL. Kelly McCrimmon continuing to show why he is so highly regarded and why he is being considered for NHL management jobs.

The scary part is they are going to be just as good or even better next year led by Patrick, who is light years ahead of Steel. The best the Pats can hope for is also-rans. Talk about sustained success. Big, fast and skilled. Memo to Pats; take note.

Yup, the pats are going to compete with this team in dreamland.

How can Pats even be used in the same conversation as the Wheatkings. Wheatkings are an organization that every year is a contender to win the league. They never "re-build". Pats don't even have any draft picks in next months bantam draft. Even if they contend the next year or two that's it, start another re-build. Their lack of draft picks this year is going to set them back again.

Nolan Patrick 5 point night in his 44th playoff game and he's only 17. This stud isn't even eligible for the NHL draft this year. Top 3 pick in the 2017 NHL draft barring injury.

Don't take this wrong I am not a Seattle fan and am cheering for Brandon but I think Seattle will be a test for Brandon. They are as big and as fast as Brandon and their tender (Bows) is out playing Papirny so far. Lastly the series will be 2 – 3 – 2 so if they get a split at Brandon they can win it at home.

Yep, Brandon pretends every you mean. How many league championships do they have recently?

And the Pats passed over Patrick to take Steel. Kelly gave Lang a 3rd round pick to pass him by so that Brandon could snap him up. What a move.

Ah Kelly McCrimmon, Rod's nemesis. You thought Rod was stirring up the pot with CFL predictions, just wait until the Wheaties win the Memorial Cup. Boy the rumour mill will be churning, Kelly funnelling money to the CHL office, spiking the opposing teams' meals with ex-lax, playing loud music outside their hotels at 3 am, etc. Biggest scandal in CHL history according to Rod "The Fireman".

Holy wheatkings homer on here. Give it up man. This is k mccrimmons league after all. Every team rebuilds or reloads and congrats to you guys. Pat on the back for finding and getting patrick. Good scouting. We're getting there. I believe it's a little thing called respect when one of the first things out of coach paddocks mouth upon his arival was "we wanna be more like brandon." I thought that was pretty cool. Hey regarding drafting tyler Benson that year was suppose to be "can't miss". I'll take steel today who had an outstanding playoffs if you cared… Read more »

Actually, Patrick said he would not report to Vancouver, Regina, OR Prince George. The only team that might have had any chance of the three was Regina and at the time, wouldn't blame him for now wanting to come. But, Kelly felt there was enough a threat to make and extra deal to ensure he got Patrick. Steel will be, as is now, a great player, but he's not Patrick. One plus, Patrick probably only has one more year in the league, where as Steel has two.

I thought steel found another level these playoffs after a season that I would personally call kinda soft. Playing with Sanford certainly did not hurt but your correct. Hes not Patrick. But if what you say us correct that patrick oykdnt report then I wouldn't want the kid. Maybe it's just me but you should feel privileged to be able to play anywhere in the dub. That reaks like Lindross . Sorry. Provrov should go pro next year too.. hrs crazy good (and mean too). We still got Hobbs next year who turned into a man playing against boys this… Read more »

There's more to Hobbs not wanting to play in Medicine Hat than just being picky and demanding to play. There have been four, possibly five, good players wanting out of Medicine Hat in as many years. There is something going on there with Clouston that kids are starting to not want to play for him. Started with Jayden Hart, then came Spencer Jensen, then Hobbs, and most recently, Sanford. On top of that, strong rumours have surfaced that Chad Butcher also wants out. Future Pat?!? With Hobbs, he was a top prospect getting sat on the benches in favour of… Read more »

Well although I'm a true Pats homer I do follow the whole dub fairly well. The west is still pretty obscure though in these parts. By no means am I a scout but I will say in my opinion Benson has been a bust. Maybe due to the fact the Giants are a mess right now. Injuries didn't help. Hey man. I'm not in the know. But hobbs reported then saw he wasn't getting an opportunity. So he wanted out. I believe patrick had a list prior to his draft. Does this happen often?? He's a talent but come on… Read more »
