WHEAT KINGS TAKE GAME 1

REGINA — Goaltending was the Regina Pats’ achilles heel in their playoff opener against the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday night at a sold out Brandt Centre.  Starting goaltender Dawson MacAuley was pulled at the 16:46 mark of the opening period after allowing four goals on 10 shots in an eventual 6-3 loss in Game 1 of their WHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with the Wheat Kings.

Jayce Hawryluk got things going for the visitors just 3:05 into the game, scoring on their first shot-on-goal.  John Quenneville, Peter Quenneville and Ryan Pilon upped Brandon’s lead to 4-0 before the period was out and it was all the offense they would need.

Brandon led 4-0 after the first frame and 5-3 after two.  Regina’s goals came from Morgan Klimchuk, Dryden Hunt and Connor Gay.

MacAuley was playing in place of the injured Daniel Wapple whose status is in doubt for the remainder of the series (ankle).  Rookie Tyler Fuhr mopped up for the Pats stopping 23 of 25 shots.  The Wheat Kings’ Jordan Papirny stopped 31 of 34 shots to get the win in his WHL playoff debut.  Regina was also missing team MVP Dyson Stevenson (hand).

Brandon outshot Regina 35-34.  The Pats were 1/6 on the powerplay and 2/3 on the penalty kill.  The attendance was announced as a sellout at 6,200.

Game 2 goes Sunday in the Brandt Centre at 7:00 pm.  620 CKRM’s broadcast begins with the Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 6:05 pm.

Last game at the Brandt Centre on Mar 23. Pats lose and will continue so in Brandon for Games 3 and 4. It's a sad evening. Miles

I can just hear the locals screaming "if we only had goaltending" bla bla bla.

Fact is, Pats would have been beat anyway. As there coach said with Phil after the game…. They were beat by a team that simply outplayed them.

We need someone a different power play unit other then 5 forwards. I recall a game in Moose Jaw at the end of the season whereby Sinitysn had 2 goals from the point. By far the hardest shot on the point from the Pats. Secondly, we need someone in front of the net screening Brandon's goalie. We are missing Dyson bug time. Hope Dyson can play game # 2. If not, I see the Pats going down 2-0 in this series. Something needs to change real quick with this power play unit. Lastly, Zaggragen if you can't play better defense.… Read more »

Wapple and a crutch has to be better than macauley and 2 legs. Awful performance. Get used to it Regina fans. Brandon will be getting the upper hand for at least the next half decade

You negative neds are out in force tonight…wonder if any of you actually went to the game? If you did you would have saw that Pats outchanced Brandon a lot in the 1st period and just couldn't catch a break. Had 3 great scoring chances (1 post) before Brandon had 1st shot. 4 Brandon goals in 1st period – 3 on screen shots and one scramble where no Pat showed up to to help Macauley after he stopped 2 shots…so don't blame it on the Tender! Fuhr did play well after relieving Macauley, for a change of pace. 2nd and… Read more »
