WILLY GETS HIS NEW CONTRACT
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today the club has extended the contract of starting quarterback Drew Willy. The pivot was entering the final year of his contract in 2015.
The club’s Most Outstanding Player from 2014 started 17 of 18 games last season, missing one due to injury, and finished third in the CFL in passing yardage with 3,769. Willy threw 14 touchdown passes, while growing into the club’s leader both on and off the field. He had six 300-yard passing games, and was twice named the Offensive Player of the Week (Weeks one and six). Willy led the Bombers to multiple come-from-behind wins, including two game winning drives in the first six weeks.
“Drew Willy is the leader of our football team. Both his skill set and his leadership on and off the field are the attributes you look for to build a solid roster,” said General Manager Kyle Walters. “We knew as an organization that we wanted to get this done before the season, and we’re really pleased we can look forward to Drew being a vital part of this franchise for multiple years to come.”
“I’m very excited to remain a Blue Bomber following this season and get this agreement in place,” said Willy. “In just one season I have really grown to love the city of Winnipeg and the entire province of Manitoba. The passion they have for our game, and specifically the Blue Bombers, makes a decision like this much easier.”
Willy was originally acquired in a trade with Saskatchewan in February of 2014, and had spent the previous two seasons with the Riders, mainly in a backup capacity.
Willy continued, “This organization has been great to my family and myself, and the foundation for a successful franchise is in place; from Wade, to Kyle, to Coach O’Shea. I’m excited for what this team and organization has to look forward to, and am grateful I get to be a part of that.”
As per team policy, details of the agreement are not disclosed.
Drew Willy accomplished intellectual CFL star. Grey Cup champion to boot. He deserves his raise as he's good for the league on and off the field. More championships from his leadership in the not too distant future.
$400 Grand per -. Wow!
Anything over 200K is an overpayment for a one year quarterback.
Oh wait he lead them to the Grey Cup
won't finish the season as the starter.
Remember Durant was shown the big bucks after 3 grey cup appearances, 1 gc win, west division champs, etc.
Willy was on the roster in 2013.
Good luck Winnipeg.
