Wednesday Commentary: What A Trip

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on All New Hits 98 & LTD Radio)
It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday on this Commentary and boy – do we have a lot!
#1 – For some inexplicable reason the CFL picked the same day as their Draft to announce a radical change to the playoff format, beginning in 2027, that’ll expand the playoff field from six to eight teams. That’s right … only one team will miss the playoffs.
At least they’re admitting it’s a cash grab. Just don’t ever bring up again, “Preserving the integrity of the league.”
Oh, and the players who were drafted deserved better than to have their big day overshadowed by an historic announcement like this.
#2 – The worm is turning in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The young, upstart teams jumped out to early series leads but the graybeard units are coming back, in just about every series. That includes Edmonton, Boston, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Vegas by name.
No wonder the TV ratings are among the highest ever.
#3 – Plenty are bemoaning the amount of women whom are on the NHL broadcasts, particularly ESPN, but it honestly makes no difference to me. In fact, judging by the ratings, it’s making nobody turn away. And besides, unless it’s an announcer who I really, really like, I generally turn the sound down anyway. These women are doing fine, and deserve the chance.
I can see what’s going on for myself, and don’t need to be told by someone whose opinion I probably don’t agree with anyway; male or female. That’s what the remote is for.
And #4 – With too much time on my hands, I checked the cost of flights to Summerside, PEI for the Centennial Cup. It runs May 7-17, and features the SJHL champion Flin Flon Bombers as one of 10 teams in the national Junior A hockey championship. The C-Cup in Estevan in 2022 was one of the greatest weeks of my life. 10 days of three hockey games per day, enjoying with my friends and family. It doesn’t get better! But wouldn’t you know it, flights are in the thousands of dollars due to the price of fuel so I’ll sit this one out, and rely on my good friend Doug Maclean for reports as they play in Mac’s backyard.
But what a great spring trip that would be.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
