3DOWNNATION: CARTER TO PLAY CORNER AGAINST REDBLACKS

Duron Carter may be able to play on both sides of the ball for the Saskatchewan Roughriders but that doesn’t mean he’s a superhero, according to head coach Chris Jones.

Jones confirmed that Carter will start at boundary corner for Saskatchewan on Thursday against Ottawa.

“He’s going to play DB. He’ll play offence if we need him. Duron’s not Superman contrary to what he might tell you. He’s an outstanding player. He can play a lot of plays but we’ll have a guy go on the roster for Duron at receiver and then we’ll put Duron at DB,” Jones told 620 CKRM radio’s, Mitchell Blair.

Nick Marshall suffered a finger injury and he’ll have surgery which has landed the first-year CFL cover man on the six-game injured list and Jones said Marshall could miss the entire six weeks. Carter returns to the boundary corner spot where he started against the Stampeders in 2017.

“Same old stuff, different game, no different, just out there playing defence instead of offence,” Carter told Blair. “I get to out and hit people and make plays and stuff. It’s easy.”

In the lead up to the Oct. 20 game last season, Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell warned Carter on Twitter not to play defensive back and Carter replied that the gunslinger better put his chasing cleats on. Carter delivered by picking off Mitchell and returning it for a touchdown.

Carter said he wouldn’t be instigating any back-and-forth with Ottawa pivot Trevor Harris, who is expected to start for the Redblacks this week.

“I didn’t send any messages, I just was replying to what he said. I’m more of a back-my-stuff-up kind of guy,” Carter said.

Jones is on record as saying Carter could be the best defensive back in the league if he played the position full time and with more reps on defence during training camp, Jones feels he’s improved as a cover man.

“Well, I think that he’ll be even better than what he was last year. He’s a better DB right now than what he was when we played him last year against Calgary, so I expect him to go in and help us win the football game,” Jones said.

But Carter does have things to improve on, according to his coach.

“His discipline a little bit, getting his eyes in the right spot and just continually being a disciplined DB,” Jones said. “That’s the main thing he’s got to work on.”
