ESKIMOS SIGN BRETT SMITH

(Edmonton) – The Edmonton Eskimos have signed international quarterback Brett Smith.

Smith entered the league in 2014 on the practice roster of the Toronto Argonauts. The following season, he signed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The six-foot-three, 206-pound native of Oregon made his debut as a Rider against the Eskimos on July 31. He finished the season completing 142-of-224 pass attempts for 1,822 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Last season, he spent time on the practice roster of the Ottawa RedBlacks.

In three seasons at the University of Wyoming (2011-13), Smith threw for 8,834 yards with a record-setting 76 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,529 yards on 378 carries with 20 touchdowns. In 2011, he was named Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, averaging 256.3 yards in total offence per game. He finished his sophomore season with 174 pass attempts and no interceptions. In his junior year, Smith ranked among the top 25 quarterbacks in the NCAA in multiple categories.
