The BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers are moving on after a dramatic Saturday in the Canadian Football League playoffs, with both road teams finding a way to advance in the Division Semifinals.

BC erased a four-point halftime deficit to defeat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 33-26 at BC Place, while Winnipeg rallied from nine points down to stun the Toronto Argonauts 25-22 at BMO Field.

The defending Grey Cup champions are out, and the BC Lions are headed to Edmonton.

The Lions produced a dominant second-half performance Saturday, overcoming a 17-13 halftime deficit to eliminate Saskatchewan in a thrilling Western Division Semifinal.

Saskatchewan appeared to have the game under control early, forcing turnovers and taking advantage of excellent field position. The Roughriders opened the game by forcing a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, and Brett Lauther connected on two 55-yard field goals to help establish a 9-3 advantage.

Tommy Stevens extended the Saskatchewan lead with a four-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point conversion reception from Samuel Emilus, putting the Riders ahead 17-3.

But Nathan Rourke and the Lions had other ideas.

Rourke connected with Stanley Berryhill III for a spectacular 69-yard touchdown pass, and Sean Whyte added a 48-yard field goal just before halftime to pull BC within four.

The Lions took over after the break.

Rourke found Jevon Cottoy for a 70-yard touchdown reception on BC’s opening possession of the third quarter, tying the game at 20. After another Lauther field goal, Rourke and Cottoy connected again, this time on a 13-yard touchdown that gave BC its first lead at 27-23.

Cottoy finished with two touchdowns, while Berryhill’s 69-yard score provided another major highlight.

Saskatchewan continued to fight, with Lauther converting six field goals, including a 44-yarder with 1:36 remaining. But BC recovered the ensuing onside kick, and the Riders’ final drive ended with a sack on the last play.

The Lions now advance to face the Edmonton Elks in the Western Final.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 25, Toronto Argonauts 22

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are headed back to the Eastern Final after producing one of the most dramatic finishes of the CFL playoff season.

Dru Brown’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Nic Demski with 44 seconds remaining lifted Winnipeg to a 25-22 victory over Toronto, completing a remarkable comeback after the Bombers trailed by nine points late in the third quarter.

Winnipeg overcame four turnovers to secure the victory, with its defence and special teams delivering crucial plays when the offence needed help.

The Argonauts appeared poised to advance after building a halftime lead, but Toronto’s inability to turn turnovers into touchdowns proved costly. The Argos forced four Winnipeg turnovers, yet managed only nine points from those opportunities.

Winnipeg’s comeback began with a defensive touchdown. Michael Fletcher’s strip sack led to David Reese’s 58-yard fumble return touchdown, cutting Toronto’s lead to two.

The Bombers eventually took advantage of another Toronto mistake when Thiadric Hansen recovered a fumble on a punt return with less than two minutes remaining.

Brown then led Winnipeg downfield, connecting with Demski for the go-ahead touchdown before finding him again for the two-point conversion.

Brown finished 18-of-30 passing for 206 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

“Yeah, if that’s how you want to frame it,” Winnipeg head coach Mike O’Shea said when asked whether the Bombers had stolen the game.

“I think what’s really important about this one is that idea, that concept of throughout a course of a game one phase might not be rolling and it’s up to the other two phases to have their back.”

The Bombers now travel to Montreal to face the Alouettes in the Eastern Final, while Toronto’s season ends in heartbreaking fashion.

The road to the Grey Cup continues next weekend, with BC visiting Edmonton and Winnipeg travelling to Montreal in two highly anticipated Division Finals.
