RAMS 35 THUNDERBIRDS 33

REGINA – Noah Picton threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 8 Regina Rams downed the UBC Thunderbirds 35-33 on Friday in U Sports action.

With the win, the Rams clinched a playoff berth and homefield in the Canada West semifinals in Steve Bryce’s first year as coach.

The Regina quarterback hit Mitchell Picton twice in the end zone while also finding Khalid Kornegay and Atlee Simon for majors. Simon also carried the ball 19 times for 111 yards and a TD on the ground for the Rams (5-2).

Michael O’Connor threw for 364 yards and two touchdowns for the reigning Vanier Cup champion Thunderbirds (3-4). Will Watson caught both TD passes from O’Connor and finished the game with eight receptions for 88 yards.

Tanner Friesen had a 56-yard interception return for UBC while kicker Greg Hutchins booted two field goals and four singles.

The governing body of Canadian university sport rebranded as U Sports on Thursday, marking the organization’s fourth name in its 110-year history. The new name replaces Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), itself the successor to the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU).

Fantastic game and great win for the Rams! WR Mitchell Picton will be a high draft pick in next years CFL draft. They will get to host the final game ever at old Taylor Field in the playoffs.
