LABOUR DAY FINAL: BLUE BOMBERS 28 ROUGHRIDERS 25
REGINA – Justin Medlock kicked seven field goals, including a game-winning boot from 43 yards, to give the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a thrilling 28-25 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday in the last-ever Labour Day Classic at Old Mosaic Stadium.
Saskatchewan’s Kendial Lawrence returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 25-25 less than a minute before Medlock’s kick. The Riders needed a convert from Tyler Crapigna for the victory, but the second-year kicker missed his attempt and set the stage for his counterpart on the opposing sideline.
Crapigna struggled with accuracy all game, missing two field goal attempts (43 and 45 yards) and the last minute convert.
The Roughriders had a few reasons to feel the game was “taken away” from them as Head Coach & GM Chris Jones stated after the game. The Bombers mounted their game-winning drive with :43 remaining and a questionable Pass Interference call on Rider DB Justin Cox put the Bombers into position for the game-winning field goal. Cox had seemingly cut underneath Winnipeg receiver Weston Dressler to snare the interception off Bomber quarterback Matt Nichols however he was called for contacting Dressler. Replays showed no contact at all.
Winnipeg (6-4) won its fifth in a row and snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Roughriders on Labour Day weekend. Saskatchewan (1-9) has lost five in a row and is 4-24 in its last 28 games since the beginning of 2015.
Winnipeg jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a field goal from Medlock and an 82-yard touchdown reception from Matt Nichols to Quincy McDuffie. The Blue Bombers led 16-3 at halftime.
Saskatchewan rallied in the second half with Darian Durant leading the charge. The Roughriders quarterback hooked up with Caleb Holley for a four-yard touchdown pass, with Holley hauling in a two-point convert to make it 19-11 after three quarters.
A four-yard touchdown run by Durant, followed by another Durant rush for a two-point convert knotted the score at 19-19 on Saskatchewan’s next drive early in the fourth quarter.
Note: Both teams will meet again on Saturday in Winnipeg for the Banjo Bowl. … The Roughriders were 0-9 heading into Labour Day last year.

CHRIS JONES POSTGAME COMMENTS
ON THE LOSS
CJ: Any time you lose in the waning moments of the game, it’s tough. When you possibly have a win, espcially when you’re on the (losing streak) that we’re currently on, and the kids fought that hard, and to have it pulled away, that’s tough.
WHY WAS IT A TOUGH NIGHT FOR K TYLER CRAPIGNA?
CJ: Good question. Tyler did have a tough night but we’ve had some other tough nights from other guys. We’ve just gotta keep working with him. He’s got work to do like everybody else. I haven’t spoken to him. I’ll just tell him to keep his head up and keep working. We’re not going to execute the kid. He’s probably harder on himself than anybody else is. I’m sure he’s crushed.
HOW DO YOU BOUNCE BACK?
CJ: They’ll bounce back. They’re too tough. They’re too mentally tough, too physically tough. There wasn’t an ounce of anybody complaining when we were down 19-3. I’ve been around a lot of good team’s that’ve won the Grey Cup that would be complaining and pointing the finger. They’ll be back and we just gotta keep on chopping wood.
WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO TURN THE CORNER?
CJ: That’s a good question. I’m looking for a book that I can read that’ll tell me that answer. Again, we know we’ve got good players in our room and we have confidence in them. I feel like our players have confidence in our staff. We just have to stick together and keep working. Eventually if we work hard enough, the bounces will go our way.
WHY THE SLOW STARTS WEEK AFTER WEEK?
CJ: That’s a good question. That’s the same question that I asked at halftime. We have to be able to get out of the chutes quicker and not always be behind the 8-ball. We gotta look at what we’re doing pregame or whatever we can do as coaches to make sure they’re ready, focused and ready to go.
WHAT DID YOU TALK TO THE OFFICIALS ABOUT AT HALFTIME?
CJ: The bump on Caleb Holley, I came back in and watched it and I was just letting them know I’d like to know what the Command Centre didn’t see to overturn their call. I’ll be waiting to hear from them what the explanation is.
WAS THE CALL ON JUSTIN COX AT THE END ACTUALLY P-I?
CJ: They’ve already fined us $65,000 for doing the same thing everybody else in the league does so I don’t want to get fined $25,000 for them viewing me as commenting on anything that has to do with officiating. Again, you saw the play and you probably have your opinion.
DOES THAT CHEAPEN ANYTHING FOR YOU?
CJ: If I didn’t challenge those plays, if I hadn’t seem them, you wouldn’t throw a flag if you didn’t think you had a pretty good chance to get a call. For whatever reason people are starting to call these “fishing expeditions”. For whatever reason, that’s become the moniker. I saw the plays on the Ipad and I saw the one on the big screen. From my view, (Roosevelt) got his hands under the ball. Maybe when he rolled over or whatever.
Anyway, that’s a part of it. Everybody has to go through this and there’s been a lotta calls that I’ve thrown the flag and didn’t get the call. I’ve gotta do a better job of looking at that Ipad a little better so that my flags are a little bit more efficient.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CHALLENGING PROCESS?
CJ: I’m a little leery of saying anything critical of the way we do things. I’ve got my views and I guess I’d better hold on to them. It’s one of those deals where, about four years ago we had the highest (TV) ratings ever, and you know, I’ll just leave it at that.

KENDIAL LAWRENCE LABOUR DAY PUNT RETURN TD
And the trend shows no sign of ending. The Labour Day Classic will go in the books as the worst stinker in decades! The first half performance saw all three aspects of the game In drastic need of repair. With over 80 players through the revolving roster Jones' plan desperately needs reviewing!!
Driving in from USA listening to Rod Pedesen on 620 CKRM on the dial, now home watching game on TSN second half. Who was the guy literally crying on the radio broadcast? He was actually crying it'a all over with this league as he complained about the officiating. Who was he? That was funny laughing out loud as the game was only at the half way point and there was alot more to go. Lmao!
Travelling busy business guy on the road
Should not have been interference on Cox and should have been an interception. They allowed hand fighting all game but not on that play?
Wonder what “Jeff” has to say on the “integrity" of the league with the BS call on Cox.
Got too far behind in the 1st half. DD wasn't good in the first half getting points for the team. Too little too late in the 2nd half. Kicking game is not up to standard. Defence is simply put too slow and not aggressive. Just another "HORRIBLE" loss.
Fire Orridge
Glen Johnson and his puppets prove time and time again they are as dumb as rocks.
The refs gave that game to the Bombers. And, it does not help that our kicker no longer knows how to kick. We can't keep doing this, and expect to win games.
I am really confused about what constitutes pass interference. It seems the rules change from play to play.
Imagirl
I agree. The review of PI hasn't made it a consistent call at all. Even when the ref has the luxury of reviewing the call in slow motion they still aren't consistent!
Five (5) Huge Mistakes killed us in a game that we should have won.
Three (3) Missed Easy Converts and Two ( 2) Interceptions thrown by Durant with less than six ( 6) minutes left in the game.
If that kicker isn't on his way out tomorrow then Jones should be gone. Congrats to most of the Riders for playing so hard and coming up empty again.
Teams cannot fall behind all the time and expect to win.
And I have NO IDEA what a penalty is in this BS league anymore.
Saskatchewan Roughriders – problem… late out the gate… inconsistent… show up second half… make one good play… make two ensuing bad plays… never punch it in the red zone starting qb Darian Durant.
Rod recently hinted at the bad blood between the Riders and the Commissioner's office. You have to wonder if that pass interference call was part of the ongoing feud.
Rod, might you care to "pull the trigger" on the story rather than "dancing around" it?
To to suggest that the league office is in a conspiracy with the officials is ridiculous. However, I agree that if Rod has a story he should be sharing it or keeping it to himself. A member of the media shouldn't be announcing to the world he has a story to tell if he doesn't want to tell it.
The 2016 Riders might possibly be the worst team in CFL history.
No matter what, they find a way to lose.
And if anyone forgot, the Riders traded the second leading rusher in the CFL for the kicker who lost the last LDC at Taylor Field.
Crapigna also won us the Ottawa game on a 53 yard boot. He is now 20 of 24 on the season from what I heard. Everyone had a bad game, if he continues to shank then they can look to others
That PI call at the end of the game was garbage. Refs handed Winnipeg the game
The last pass interference call is on you Rod. You've been beating this conspiracy thing to death and the CFL has likely had enough of you trying to make them look bad. Flag comes out and official smirks in your direction no doubt. League office says, that's what you get. So, PLEASEEEEE! SHUT IT ALREADY, YOU'RE COSTING US WINS.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That you Jeff?
Also ridiculous
Progress again this game and more good plays than bad but it is so painful to go through this stage. Exciting game and we can't blame Crapigna for the loss. Darian was intercepted twice and way too many penalties in first half. Team loss and we move on. Gotta keep chopping wood.
Thank you refs for that PI.
Glen Johnson will probably say the refs are doing great each game.
The easy thing to do is blame the ref. But anyone that was at the game, watch the replay of the play the riders challenged early in the 3rd to burn the challenge (that could have reversed the PI call at the end) I;m not anti chris jones but he over thought this game with his challenges and going for it early on 3rd down & trick plays instead of a punt that would have pinned the bombers deep. The kicking killed this team today. But he has been more than solid in other games where the defense and offence… Read more »
Reality is the refs didn't cost us this game. 2 INTs, 2 missed FGs and a missed convert cost us this game. This team sucks, we have no running game and our defence is gutless and gives up plays and yards all day. Durant was throwing side arm. He's not 100%. We aren't winning with him. Time to move on to the next QB so we aren't starting from scratch in 2017.
The PI call was garbage but didnt lose us the game. Two missed field goals and a missed convert along with too slow to score in the first half cost us. Durant doesnt appear to be able to play a whole 60 minutes. Durant doesnt look like the same guy he was three years ago. Time for him to ride into the sunset and let GAle or Bridge take over. We dont have a legit run game either. Leave Lawrence returning kicks and get a credible RB and we'll be okay. the season is pretty well lost, but if we… Read more »
The Rider's offense has gradually being getting better and the future looks better as Durant builds experience and confidence with future CFL stars like Holley and Collins, to go with Bagg and Roosevelt. Durant is now heading into his peak years and is the reason to see some light at the end of this rebuilding tunnel.
Durant is currently IN his peak years not heading into them.
