The Regina Thunder offence exploded for 58 points and the defence held Winnipeg to just two field goals in a 58-7 route of the Rifles Saturday night at Investors Group Field.

With the victory, the Thunder improved to 2-1 on the season.

A field goal and Sawyer Buettner’s first touchdown pass of the season – to Kris Calcutt with 1:43 left in the first quarter – gave the Thunder a 10-6 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

The Rifles conceded a safety in the second to make it 12-6 and they upped their lead to 19-6 on a touchdown catch from Kristiane Desautels. Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette added to the lead with his fourth rushing touchdown of the season to make it 28-6. The Rifles were set up at the 1 yard line late in the half but the Thunder defence stuffed them at the goal line and took the 22 point lead into halftime.

In the third quarter Buettner hooked up with Kris Calcutt for a pair of touchdowns to extend the lead to 41-6 going into the fourth.

In the final stanza the Thunder offence continued to roll adding 17 more points and took the contest 58-7.

With the win the Thunder will exit Week 3 in a tie for 2nd place in the PFC with the loser of the Saskatoon Hilltops and Calgary Colts game on Sunday afternoons.

The Thunder return home for a Week 4 showdown with Winnipeg (1-2) at Leibel Field on September 3.
