GAME 1: CARDINALS 6 REGINA 5

The Yorkton Cardinals needed extra innings to defeat the Regina Red Sox 6-5 in Game 1 of their best of five first round WMBL playoff series Monday in Yorkton.

Allan Sanchez got the nod from Red Sox manager Mitch MacDonald to start the 2016 playoffs for Regina.

He lasted 5.2 innings, giving up nine hits and five runs before handing the ball to the bullpen combination of Seth Sorensen and Skyler Henson.

Sam Brunner, who came into the game in the eighth inning, took the loss for Regina. He gave up a single to Yorkton’s Caden Rosholt, which allowed Chance Wheatly to score from second base and end the game in the bottom of the tenth.

Offensively, Red Sox third baseman Aden Campbell was two for three with two walks, a run scored and an RBI.  Regina also scored runs on a Yorkton error and two wild pitches.

Reliever Spencer Jackson threw five scoreless innings for the Yorkton win.

During the contest the Red Sox stranded eight base runners while the Cardinals left 10 men on base.

Announced attendance at Jubilee Park for Game 1 was 300. Game 2 will be played at in Yorkton on Tuesday night.

The two teams will return to Regina for Game 3 on Wednesday night. If needed, Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday night at Currie Field. Start times for all WMBL playoff games is 7:05 pm.
