SHEETS' COMEBACK BEGINS WITH MONTREAL

Kory Sheets’ pro football comeback will begin with the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.

The Alouettes confirmed in a text message to RodPedersen.com on Tuesday that they are expecting Sheets – the MVP of the 2013 Grey Cup – to participate in their spring minicamp beginning Wednesday at Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach, FL.

Sheets hasn’t played football since August of 2014 when he ruptured an Achilles tendon while playing for the Oakland Raiders in a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.  He received an injury settlement and spent over a year rehabbing the injury.

However the 31-year old Tampa Bay, FL product has deemed himself fit to return to the field and has hinted in recent days on his Twitter account that he’ll be in camp with the Alouettes.

The Purdue grad spent 2009-2011 in the NFL with San Francisco, Miami and Carolina before joining the Saskatchewan Roughriders for 2012 and 2013.  His 197 yards rushing in the 2013 Grey Cup game were a CFL record and earned him MVP honours.

However Sheets comes with a checkered past.  In fact a “Google Image” search turns up various photos from his brushes with the law and other transgressions.  To his credit, he’s always faced the music.

The Roughriders reportedly considered bringing Sheets into one of their free agent workouts this off-season however subsequent background checks scared them off.

The Alouettes, however, are undaunted and are at least willing to give Sheets a look in Florida this weekend.

We wish him well.  He’s been nothing but engaging and accomodating in our dealings in the past and perhaps he’s ready for a new lease on life.

31 is still pretty young and HE hasn't played in 2 years. He might be one of the best running backs the CFL has ever seen. If he's healthy, it might bring some excitement back to the CFL? Good luck!

One thing about Jim Popp, he likes his team to be older than average so Kory Sheets is a logical fit for the Als. You can be sure that had AC not suffered a concussion to end his career he would still be the teams QB ala George Blanda (who played to age 48).

Rod,
Have you ever considered having the host of the podcast "Let's Talk CFL" on Sportscage?

It would be incredibly interesting to hear him defend his reasoning as to why Edmonton will repeat as champions in 2016 on your show.

If you're not interested, perhaps Luc would be with his podcast? Gary Etchevary would be the exact person that this guy should speak with.

Either way it would be a great discussion for anyone who listens.

To the first comment on the board…you say Sheets hasnt played for two years and he is 31 years old, so he should go off into the sunset. Isn't there a certain 33 year old quarterback that hasnt't played close to two years now also and is being paid 450,000 dollars…I think his name is Darian Durant.

Agreed. Full of factual errors and just plain stupidity.

I will never get the hour of my life back I spent listening to them.

I was really hoping to have him say to a larger audience the event that clinched his decision that Edmonton would repeat as Champions.

The sound of thousands laughing simultaneously would have been great 🙂

I wish Sheets nothing but the best!! Been a stand up guy every time I've met him. If you focus on peoples pasts you'll never know who they are today.

wonder if those Rider background checks were on field related or off?

The running back position and quarterback position are not the same wear and tear wise on your body just so you know.

Sheets has an opportunity to determine whether he can still play or not. Otherwise he will wonder for years if he could have played the game he loves.
Good luck to Kory

No surprise that Jones didn't want Sheets in the fold. I seen for myself that he's not exactly a team guy and it was right here in the garlic belt. Sure he was great in 2013 but we're moving on and building a new team. Jones seems like he has little patience with crap disturbers.

Sheets reminds of the character demeaner "Can't Get Right" from the "Eddie Murphy movie Life". Remains to be seen if he can continue his playing career at his age, injury, two year lay-off, good luck trying though. If not able to resume, nice try cupcake!

There is not a hope that he will de-throne Tyrell Sutton. Why waste the $100 Sheets?
