REBELS 5 PATS 1, REGINA FACING ELIMINATION

RED DEER – The Red Deer Rebels got goals from five different scorers in a 5-1 playoff triumph over the Regina Pats Friday night in the Centrium.  With the win, the Rebels now lead the second round WHL series 3-2 and for the first time in these playoffs, the Pats are facing elimination.
The Pats were in a hole pretty much from the outset.  They afforded Red Deer a 5-on-3 powerplay just 2:03 into the game and the Rebels’ Haydn Fleury cashed in with his first of the playoffs at 3:02 for an early 1-0 lead.
That lead held up into the second period but the Pats had plenty of chances in the opening 40 minutes to make the Rebels pay, however they squandered four-minute and five-minute powerplays.  They wound up trailing 2-0 after two periods.
The floodgates opened in the third as the Rebels mounted a 4-0 lead.  The game might’ve turned at the 6:15 mark of the third when Regina’s Cole Sanford appeared to have scored to make it 4-1 however the goal was called back and the Pats’ Jared Freadrich was assessed a double-minor for high-sticking.  It was an onscure ruling which caused much debate.
The Rebels subsequently went up 5-0 and all that was left was the shutout for Red Deer goaltender Rylan Toth however Regina’s Sean Richards ended that with his first of the playoffs with 5:07 remaining.
Game over: 5-1 Rebels.
It was undoubtedly the Pats’ worst game of the playoffs and perhaps their worst game in the New Year.  Hopefully they can recover in Sunday’s elimination game.
NOTES:  Red Deer outshot the Pats 46-27. … Regina was 0/5 on the powerplay and 4/5 killing penalties. … The attendance was 6185.
The Pats now trail the series 3-2 and will look to force a Game 7 when they host Game 6 on Sunday at 4:00 pm in the Brandt Centre at 4:00 pm on 620 CKRM and Access 7.

Rebels came to play…we had our chances but didn't adjust to whatever Rebels did on our PP. Brown played well enough and gave us a chance. Heard we are sold out Sunday…gonna be fun!

The Rebels manhandled the Pats all night and really have done so all series, and now the Pats are showing the signs of wear. They smacked us around all night and there was no response by the Pats. They used their size to win all the battles at both ends of the ice. Combine with poor discipline and soft plays all night it wasn't pretty. Woods may be out and Holmes took a heck of lick. That's how they do it. Too cute leads to golfing. Sutter knows what size and work ethic can do. He knows what kind of… Read more »

Won't have a sniff next game unless coaches decide to run the bench different and involve the whole team. It's obvious the 10 man show is a fail.

Are people really that upset with Pats these playoffs? Win or lose this series they were never meant to challenge for the Ed Cheynowth Cup. They have exceeded expectations and all these meaningful playoff games are going to do loads for these kids in the future. We are the 3rd youngest team in the league. Of course RD is going to be bigger and stronger. We're trending up. When was the last time we made it to back to back 2nd rounds? The future is bright.

The Pats either are getting worn down or took the night off. Hopefully the later, so they should be rested then for Game 6. No holding back as you don't want to be eliminated on home ice. And you would hope the same for Game 7 if that happens. You know Brandon is hoping it goes 7.

Looks like game is sold out, is there a resale website for Pats tickets? Need 4 tickets

We were all you "debbie downers" the last 2 games? Easy to talk trash when your Rebels Team wins. Certainly your Team is bigger (but not as fast) and was built for this year, and this year only, as you are hosting the Memorial Cup. All Teams sell the future when the opportunity of hosting the Cup is provided to them. If Rebels are so good and Pats are so horrible why is it going to a 6th game, shouldn't the series have been over in 4 games? It's Junior hockey and all Teams have thier ups and downs. Take… Read more »

Hey Bill. . I've also enjoyed this season and hope paddock has a few more years left in him . We also did sell high on Sanford . First round pick. I agree it's been a great ride but I just don't want it to end these boys were whipped. Let's just hope it was a bad bus ride and we can come back and frustrate the big old red deer club Sutterite lol. I'll be there cheering them on. Cheers go pats go!

I would try usedregina.com or kijiji.ca – may be some on there or post an ad saying you are looking for tickets.

Great post Pearse. You have echoed my exact thoughts. To get further than 5 games in the second round surpassed my expectations for this young team. Yes last night's game sucked but the players will learn from it. Red deer played the best game they had in a long time (words of a red deer fan, not me). You never know what will happen tomorrow. Win or lose let's give these kids more support than they have ever seen! The future looks very bright!

anyone can see the Rebels are pounding the Pats into submission. They didn't care about games 3 and 4 because they were just softening them up. Last night was putrid and Pats didn't engage at all. To come out for such a key game and lay an egg is telling. Getting hit all night and not being able to respond must be frustrating. This thing is likely over on Sunday and then I'm sure the excuses will start happening. Sutter built this team to win, and they are simply too big and tough for us to handle.

Rebels are like the LA Kings where they aren't the top skilled team in entire league, but they Sutter-pound you into submission until you wake up and you're outta playoffs.
