Stelio Mattheos’s even strength goal at 5:24 of the second period held up as the winner as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Regina Pats 2-1 Friday evening at Westman Communications Group Place.
Regina’s Taylor Cooper opened the scoring at 4:18 of the first period before the Wheaties’ Jace Hawryluk tied it with 1:42 remaining and it was 1-1 after 20 minutes. Mattheos’s third goal of the season was the only scoring the rest of the way.
Brandon carried the play all evening, outshooting the Pats 53-16. Regina’s Tyler Brown took the loss, making a remarkable 51 saves while the Wheat Kings’ Logan Thompson earned the win with 15 stops.
Regina was 0/3 on the powerplay and 3/3 killing penalties. The attendance was 4011. With the loss, Regina’s win streak was snapped at three games.
The Pats (10-9-1) visit the Prince Albert Raiders in the second of nine straight road games on their rodeo trip Saturday evening at 7:00 on 620 CKRM.
Outshot 53-16 would seem like no contest to me . Regina's goalie must have been hot or most likely lucky to keep the score so low.
Paddock called the effort embarrassing.
I watched the game on WHL Live. Yes T Brown played very well but a lot of the shots were not real scoring chances (remember this is in an opposition arena). Brown played very good positionally and therefore made good saves, not lucky saves. I do beleive our goaltending future is very good for sure. While on the other hand we likely had 7-8 good scoring chances, out of the 16 shots, that thier goalie made real good saves on so unbelievably it could have gone into OT very easily. Good decision trading 20 year old Wapple because this Brown kid was great last night.
Watched the game…It was pretty much men vs boys. None of the pats I was looking forward to watching made an appearance. Tender made a pile of dandys.
