ROUGHRIDER TRANSACTIONS

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have made the following transactions:

· ADD international quarterback Blake Sims to the roster.
· ADD international defensive back Keith Lewis to the practice roster.
· RELEASE international quarterback Hutson Mason from the practice roster.

Lewis (6’1 – 190) recently had his negotiation rights acquired by the Riders in a trade with the Calgary Stampeders. After four seasons at the Virginia University of Lynchburg the Chicago native signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in May, 2014. He later went on to join the New York Jets practice squad in December and remained with the club through 2015 training camp, appearing in three preseason games.

What is the story on this Lewis? A 6'1" 190 lb DB we went after. Hope he is not just Fodder we will discard latter. A lot of the DB's this size have become Linebackers in the past……there is a trend to the Larger receivers, so I wonder how the Dressler's and Ryan Smith's survive……Larger Receivers require larger DB's……like I said hope this Lewis becomes an All Star and we will remember these trades as winner moves.

Finally; at long last we've started to see the need for 6' or better DB's.

So this is who we traded Messam for. I hope he turns out to be a stud, and I will happily eat my words if he does. The whole "we were going to lose Messam in free agency anyways" is almost always a load of BS in the CFL, unless you have really good intel that the player was dead set on free agency (e.g. Fantuz wanting to go home to Hamilton.) I doubt that was the case with Messam, whose career was in tatters before we gave him a chance. I suspect Calgary will keep him for next year… Read more »
