CAPITALS LAND KEYSTONE CUP

REGINA, SK-The Saskatchewan Hockey Association, Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL) and Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals are pleased to announce the Capitals selection as the host team for the 2016 Keystone Cup. Since 1983 the Keystone Cup has been awarded to the top junior B team from Western Canada and Northwestern Ontario.

The Keystone Cup features a six-team round-robin that includes the host Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals from the PJHL, Keystone Junior Hockey League champion (Manitoba), PJHL champion (Saskatchewan), Russ Barnes Trophy winner (Alberta), Cyclone Taylor Cup winner (British Columbia), and Williams Ryan Trophy winner (Northwestern Ontario). In all, the top five teams of 11 league champions will meet in Regina in April 2016 at the Keystone Cup.

This will be the ninth time that Saskatchewan has played host to the Keystone Cup since its inception, but the first time this prestigious championship has been decided in Regina. The Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals are excited to host the tournament at the Co-operators Centre at Evraz Place.  Opened to the public in May 2010 the Co-operators Centre is a 286,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility featuring six 200 by 85-foot ice surfaces, 32 dressing rooms and meeting room space, along with seating for 1,400 in the main arena.

Capitals Governor Jeff MacPherson notes “With Regina’s history as a first-class host of events the Co-operators Centre provides an exceptional facility for the teams coming to Regina to compete for the Keystone Cup”.

The Regina Capitals franchise has a long history in the City of Regina that can be traced to 1911. This history includes notable hockey figures like Don Metz (1942), Dick Irvin Sr. (1921), Eddie Shore (1925) and Hick Abbott (1911).  A founding member of the South Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in 1992 and the Prairie Junior Hockey League (2007), Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals have participated in the Keystone Cup twice, finishing second in 1995 and winning the championship in 2004.

The 2016 organizing committee will work with sponsors and volunteers to make the event the best Keystone Cup ever.  For more information on the 2016 Keystone Cup please visit http://thekeystonecup.com on Twitter @keystonecup2016, and/or Instagram http://instagram.com/thekeystonecup.
