Connor McDavid is back. The 17-year-old hockey prospect scored his first goal since breaking a bone in his hand in November, and added two assists to lead Canada in a 4-0 win over Germany in round-robin play at the world junior championship in Montreal. Eric Comrie stopped 17 shots for the win.

Johnny Gaudreau scored twice to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. The Flames have won two straight games. Edmonton, meanwhile, has one win in its last 21 games.

Earlier, the Red Wings needed overtime to get past the Senators in Ottawa. Gustav Nyquist scored 4:12 into the extra period as Detroit edged the Sens 3-2. And in Minnesota, Andrew Ladd scored in O-T to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-3 win over the Wild.

Around the NHL, Tyler Ennis scored in a shootout as the Sabres beat the Islanders 4-3, Kevin Connauton had a goal and two assists to lead the Blue Jackets in a 6-2 win over the Bruins, Derek Stepan had a hat trick to give the Rangers their eighth straight victory, 3-1 over New Jersey, and Shane Doan scored the only goal in the shootout with a broken stick as Arizona edged Anaheim 2-1.

The LA Clippers lost at Staples Center for the first time since mid-November, and it was the Toronto Raptors that handed them the rare defeat. Kyle Lowry had 25 points and Jonas Valanciunas added 22 points and 11 boards in the 110-98 win.

Michael Sam said in a TV documentary that aired tonight that coming out as gay was the right thing to do. The Oprah Winfrey Network says the 90-minute program, followed by a one-on-one with Winfrey and Sam, was the player’s first TV appearance since being cut by the Dallas Cowboys in mid-October. After one day of filming last spring, the St. Louis Rams pulled the plug on the network’s plans for a Sam documentary during training camp.

Notice on the Rider web site that there are free agent workouts for the team in January in Las Vegas. When was the last time there was such a camp?

Johnny Gaudreau (Hockey) looked better than all the Oiler #1's last night including Eberle.

Funny how getting rid of Iginla and Kipper was going to kill the Flames franchise and make them 10 times worse than the Oilers for many years, so said Oiler and other hockey fans.
