ETCHEVERRY OUT IN WINNIPEG

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fired defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverry on Wednesday.

He spent less than one year in the position. The Blue Bombers missed the playoffs after finishing last in the CFL West Division standings with a 7-11 record.

“Obviously a decision like this is a very difficult one to make on many levels,” head coach Mike O’Shea said in a release. “The reality of the situation is such that we simply weren’t good enough on the defensive side of the football this season, and felt that we needed to go in a different direction in this regard.

“Gary is a good man and good football coach, and the Blue Bombers wish him well moving forward.”

Etcheverry, who was hired last February, previously served as a defensive co-ordinator in Saskatchewan (2000, 2009, 2010), Ottawa (2004), B.C., (2001) and Toronto (1999).

He first joined the CFL’s coaching ranks in 1997 as a defensive line coach with the Argonauts and later served as the team’s head coach (2002) and president of football operations. Etcheverry also has previous coaching experience in the NFL, German Football League, CIS, Canada Junior Football League and NCAA.

Would be great to see Etch and Mullinder writing columns on this blog next year!

It would be great if Rod could get him to return in 2015 to writing on the blog and appearing on the Sports Cage.

Etch should never have been fired by the Riders in the first place. 2011 was a bad year to begin with without having the mastermind Etch running the thrilling defensive schemes.

Having him on the Sports Cage would be great, but even better him reunited with the Riders' as DC! He is the best candidate out there.

Y'er welcome again.

Etch didn't get fired on 2011; he got demoted to "defensive assistant" because Marshall brought Richie back, and so he left the Riders. Get your facts straight.

For the first time ever I agree with Obama. Etch should not have been jacked around by the Riders and while I doubt he'd come back he'd be a welcome addition in my mind.

Etch as the Riders DC? Obama is way out to lunch as usual.

The only reason Etch’s defence looked good with the Riders was because of a guy named Eddie Davis. He got guys lined up properly and made Etch’s D look good. The Riders don’t have an Eddie Davis clone on their defence right now, so if he was the new DC in Riderville it would look a lot like the Blue Bombers D of last year (swiss cheese).

We do not need Etch and his one of a kind defenses. There is a reason he keeps getting let go. His scheme is to far out there.

Having him back on the SportsCage telling all of us how he could pick apart League offences again would be great!

Only in Sask could someone go to another team and have his area be embarrassed and have people say we should have never fired him. Open your ears everyone that plays for him thinks he's a joke!

Obama! Shut up already! Does everything on here have to be about you? You are the most self- centred bastard on here. As far as I'm concerned, this is Rod Pedersen's blog… NOT YOUR'S!

Etch's defenses were not predicable however they were strange to say the least. Sometimes they worked but most times they were just bizarre. If he was so great why did WPG get rid of him? Perhaps it was the fact that WPG was second worst in defense next to the worst team Ottawa.Even soft Richie's D was better. No thanks.
The Riders need a younger aggressive DC not another retread with weird ideas.

Etch's defense is the wrong defense now a day in the CFL. Back when the CFL was 90% pass it was a good defence. Now with a balanced attack by most CFL offences. Any team can run all over his schemes. Perfect example was the 1st game in Winnipeg. SK ran 150 yards in the second half alone. He is not and will not ever be a DC in SK again. You can take that to the bank. The second half of the 2009 Grey Cup saw Montreal move the ball up all over the field and score 16 unanswered points.… Read more »
