THE WEDNESDAY THRILLER … WITH PHIL ANDREWS

Voice of the Pats Phil Andrews

How about them Regina Pats?

The Blue and White won their 4th straight and 7th of 8 Wednesday night in OT over the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-4 at the Brandt Centre. Connor Gay scored twice including the game winner on an absolute beauty finish on the backhand. The Saskatoon product added an assist as well and leads the club with 23 points.  Wednsday night it was the Patrick D’Amico, Dryden Hunt and Connor Gay line’s turn to shine in the win. The impressive thing about this team over this stretch is that it’s not just one line that contributes. Three lines are scoring and its resulting in wins. Tristan Jarry did have an off night last night for Edmonton who aren’t the same team that won the Memorial Cup last year, not that anyone expected they would be.

Morgan Klimchuk extended his point streak to 8 games with an assist last night. Now has 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points in that stretch.

Huge congrats to rookie forward Rykr Cole out of Moosomin Saskatchewan on his first WHL goal last night.

Kyle Burroughs, Colby Williams plus minus is off the charts early on. Burroughs is a plus 21 and Williams a plus 18 so far. Whats incredible is that there have only been 30 goals the Pats have scored where a plus was available. (Even strength or short handed). Those two have been on the ice a lot 5 on 5 and are playing lights out on the back end.

– I know I’m risking sounding like a homer with this but you might agree that Daniel Wapple got snubbed a little in the CHL goalie of the Week nomination from the WHL. Rylan Toth of the Red Deer Rebels got the nod after a 2 and oh week with a 1.50 GAA and a .940 save percentage. Great numbers no doubt but the games were against the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Saskatoon Blades. Wapple on the other hand beat P.A. Medicine Hat and Seattle, much tougher competition with a 3 and oh record, a 2.16 GAA and a .947 save percentage. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter much and the Pats are just happy with the wins but it has me scratching my head.

– Former Regina Pats assistant coach Bill McGuigan is back as head coach of the Summerside Capitals of the MHL on Prince Edward Island. When Bill took over the team they were 2 games under 500 but has coached them to an 8-1-2 record since. Good to see such a great guy having success.

– The Rider season is over after a tough game on Sunday in Edmonton. The offense had nothing while the defense had everything and they couldn’t pull it off. The lack of a run game really hurt the Green and White and the Edmonton defense had a performance for the ages. Kerry Joseph was under a huge amount of pressure and couldn’t get the job done. Tino Sunseri looked a little better in relief but in the end it wasn’t enough. Tough game to watch that’s for sure.

– Lots of questions going forward: do the Riders keep Sunseri as the backup or move on to someone else? Do they re-sign Dressler, Heenan, Foley, Jackson to name a few. Could be an off season with a lot of change to the roster. Will be interesting to watch.

– The Blue Jays have signed Canadian catcher Russell Martin at 5 years and 82 million dollars. The second biggest contract in Blue Jays history. Pretty cool that there will be two Canadians on the roster come this season. A lot of money though. Now what do they do with Dioner Nevarro who had a darn good year last season. He could fetch a decent return in a trade for sure.

– How bad were the Leafs last night??? 9-2 loss at home to the Nashville Predators. First of all its almost unheard of for the Preds to score more than 4 times but my god that is so bad. Everyone is calling for Randy Carlyle to be fired, the pain for Leafs Nation continues…

– Was anyone else surprised to see the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football against the Steelers this week? Going in I thought it was going to be a blow out and not worth prime time. But wow did the Titans have a game, yes they didn’t win but they fought hard and lost by just three. Maybe they should play in prime time all the time, they might have more than 2 wins.

– Be sure to catch Pats TV on Access 7 tonight at 6:30. My guests this week, forward Rykr Cole and defenceman Chase Harrison. We also have a pretty cool video of the Pats new bus, shown below:

That’s it from me today, have a good week and talk to you from Vancouver on Friday at 9PM on 620 CKRM.

A few things: First I am very busy unlike a lot of you people so I'll be brief. 1) No they do not keep Sunseri. They can make a fair offer to Dressler, and hopefully he can have a free Italian Star sandwich. Past that he is not worth it. The Riders need to upgrade at Receiver and start getting in big #1 and #2 Receivers like Montreal has with SJ Green and Carter. Prior to that it was Richardson and Green. This allows the QB to put the ball up and 9.5/10 those big Receivers are coming down with… Read more »

"the Leafs are bad"; you don't say Brother Obama. You forgot to add that the Habs are good! Anyways, thanks for your deep insight into hockey because you are always so out to lunch on football matters.

Great to see the Pats on a W streak going into the tough road trip. They are playing very well and with a lot of confidence. Playing the young guys in all situations is adding the offensive and defensive depth we haven't had in years. I like Paddock's way of thinking.

Russ, What you don't know about hockey could fill a book. Actually on a lighter note hockey talk on here is always good. I long ago gave up the hate for the Habs. I mean why? As a Leafs fan growing up let's see I had Wendel Clark…..Rick Vaive, Russ Courtnall and Allan Bester. I love Wendel, but that wasn't exactly the 85 Oilers. Habs are Canada's best shot at Stanley Cup. Past them, it's just all about making money for these Canadian teams. The New York Rangers…..they make one trade for a guy anybody could have picked up and… Read more »

Right on Obama, you are one of the few who actually gets it. Dressler did little for us in the second half. He is too small and not worth the huge money he thinks he's worth. That's why he's "exploring his options". It's a long way from being the only place he ever wanted to play. Sunseri was given the ball a number of times, and failed every time. Forget an overtime win against the Redblacks. It's time to get bigger and faster. 6'4" to 6'6'receivers. Dressler like Fantuz can explore elsewhere. Chicken dinner Geroy should be off the books… Read more »

Dressler did little for us only because of incompetent quarterbacks and being double covered idiot .

Been a baseball fan all my life but man, I so hate the Jays. I hope they never win.

To whom wrote that, Once again I am a very busy man I have not time to waste on this stuff. First of all, The SMS should have an aggregate value for each position. This means low-mid-max, and you assign in accordingly for import/non-import. Dressler is not at the max of this, and added to the fact he's a snapped leg on a kickoff return away from the end I would not risk it nor pay it. Let Ottawa blow their budget on him. Dressler came back to Saskatchewan as he knew the playbook and could step in to then… Read more »

…again I'm busy, but I have to comment on the baseball stuff.

The Jays need pitching so they go out and get an $80M Catcher….Catcher, SS, and 2B you don't need offense from. A complete waste and people wonder why it's a garbage franchise.

Thank goodness teams like Colorado and Houston take the emphasis off of how crappy the Jays are. These teams at least have great ballparks to visit, and enjoy an evening out.

Obama have you heard of pitch framing! The staff will be improved just by that alone. Plus you are a blow hard ! So friggin blow off already! You are dumb! As for pitching take a look at the young guns coming before you speak too loud next time first! Lol

Again, I'm to busy for this crap I don't have all day to educate you on this stuff.

…hey $82M to frame a pitch? I could take 15 minutes to show the guy they have how to do that. It's also pretty tough to frame a pitch with the other team is knocking the sh#t out of the ball for 9 innings, and pounding the crap out of the bullpen past the 6th inning.

The product on ice much better than the first place Pats last season. Nice to see a professional coach not screaming all the time on bench as well. I just really wish the DJ would tone down the party bar music with EVERY SINGLE WHISTLE. Can't even talk to the person beside your when play stops. A few times, play some music , great, but this guy is hitting the playmix the second whistle goes each and every time.
Love the new Pats Bus too.

I have to agree with Obama on a couple things .. 80 some mil on a back loaded contract is insane for a catcher you just know will under achieve now that he's landed on his gravy train..(see Ricky Romero ) sorry but you gotta scout scout scout that talent.. Dresser? Love the guy but I agree you just don't break the bank for a guy that is clearly no longer a game changer. Solid receiver who sorely missed a solid qb this year but what do ya do. Just don't tell Van stone that as he gushes about his… Read more »

With most things dumbass Obama is partially right yet mostly wrong. Tom Brady with Michigan started in 98 and 99 but he was behind other guys in 96 and 97. Went 20-5In 2 seasons. Obama is thinking of his Brady's high school he wasn't a starter on his high school team
