Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray has Stage 4 colon cancer. Murray announced the severity of his disease in a televised interview on TSN. He says doctors believe the cancer went undetected in his body for up to 10 years. Murray has been undergoing chemotherapy since his was first diagnosed this summer.

On the ice, the Senators edged the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in overtime. Mike Hoffman scored twice, including the O-T winner as Ottawa spoiled an Edmonton comeback. The Sens led 3-0 after the first period but saw that lead disappear after the Oilers scored three consecutive goals. In Calgary, Paul Byron had two goals to lead the Flames in a 5-3 win over Arizona.

The Montreal Canadiens are on a hot streak. Max Pacioretty scored twice and Dale Weiss had a penalty shot goal as Montreal dominated the Boston Bruins 5-1 for their fourth consecutive win. It was the second straight rout for the Bruins, who dropped a 6-1 decision in Toronto on Wednesday. Earlier, the Winnipeg Jets topped Carolina 3-1.

The Toronto Raptors are no longer perfect at home. Pau Gasol had 27 points to lead the Chicago Bulls to hand Toronto its first loss of the season at the ACC with a 100-93 decision. The Raptors and Bulls are now tied for top spot in the Eastern Conference with 7-2 records.

Miami QB Ryan Tannehill shook off five sacks and a third-quarter deficit as the Dolphins rallied to a 22-9 win over the Buffalo Bills. Tannehill threw for 240 yards and two late touchdowns to help the Dolphins break a streak of three consecutive losses to Buffalo.

Mike Trout has finally topped the balloting. After two straight runner-up finishes, the Angels outfielder is a unanimous choice as the American League Most Valuable Player. He got all 30 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America and is the first unanimous choice since Ken Griffey Junior. in 1997. Clayton Kershaw won the NL MVP.
