SATURDAY EYE-OPENER

Boyd Gordon late in the third period to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Gordon scored on a giveaway, taking a pass from Teddy Purcell on a 2-on-1 break and poking the puck past goalie Michal Neuvirth (NOY’-virth), who was out of position. The win was Edmonton’s first of the year on the road.

Around the NHL, Mikkel Boedker scored in the shootout to lead Arizona to a 3-2 victory over Anaheim. Carolina handed Columbus its seventh straight loss, 3-2 in overtime, Detroit doubled up New Jersey 4-2, and Washington edged Chicago 3-2 to snap a five-game losing skid.

Eric Rogers caught two touchdown passes as the Calgary Stampeders downed the B.C. Lions 33-16. The Stampeders, who had already clinched first place in the West Division, finished the regular season with a 15-3 record. B.C. wound up 9-9 and missed a chance to clinch third place in the West. The Lions could face a cross-over playoff game against an Eastern team, depending on how Saskatchewan fares against Edmonton (on Saturday).

The Argos needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive and they got it. Trevor Harris threw for two touchdowns in his first C-F-L start as Toronto downed the expansion Ottawa Redblacks 23-5. Harris was filling in for Number-1 Q-B Ricky Ray, who suffered a concussion last week. If Montreal beats Hamilton Saturday, the Argos secure second place in the East and advance to the playoffs.

Kyle Lowry was all over the Washington Wizards. The Raptors point guard had 13 points, 10 assists and a season-high 11 rebounds for his first triple-double of the season as Toronto toppled the Wizards 103-84. DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points for the Raptors, who are off to the first 5-and-1 start in team history.

Jennifer Wakefield, Haley Irwin and Rebecca Johnston scored to give Canada a 3-1 win over Finland in round-robin action at the Four Nations Cup women’s hockey tournament. The Canadians finish pool play with a 3-0 record to ensure a rematch of the Sochi gold medal game with the United States in tomorrow’s final.
