CHAMBLIN PROVIDES TEAM UPDATE

Here are the comments of Rider coach Corey Chamblin upon the team’s return from Edmonton and Friday’s 24-0 loss to the Eskimos which left both teams’ records at 9-4:

INJURY STATUS:

CC: Taj Smith has a shoulder injury.  I don’t know the extent of it.  We’ll be able to evaluate it more now that we’re back in town.  Tristan Jackson, I haven’t met with the medical staff yet, but he was up walking around so I don’t think there’s anything too over-bearing.

WAS YOUR TEAM ILL-PREPARED FOR A PARKING LOT FIGHT?

CC:  I’m not gonna say ‘ill-prepared’.  I thought we went out and did some things but like I said, they played better.  There’s never going to be excuses about whether it was a short week or things like that.  We just didn’t execute well enough.  I think that game could’ve been well out of hand.  But we slowed them down and that was the key.

QB SITUATION

CC:  Everything has to always be evaluated, and I’ll evaluate everything, coaches included, and see if there’s any major changes, or tweaks, going down the stretch to get us the wins we need.  We’re in this situation at QB due to injury.  This is the hand we were dealt and how we handle this will determine how we finish the season.

ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR A VETERAN QB?

CC:  For me, my job is to coach the ones we have.  If management feels that’s what we need to do, then we’ll go in that direction.  I don’t know who the options are, so we’ll have to go from there.

ON A STARTING QB AGAINST CALGARY

CC:  I’ve watched the game, I’ll look at it again, and see who had a better feel for it.  One was 5/11, the other was 6/12.  To me, that’s the same guy.  Everything’s week to week.  They are here and what we’re dealing with are Tino, Seth and Keith.  Until something changes, that’s what we have.

There were some balls thrown.  Both guys did some good things but we need to be be better offensively.  We need to be better in all three phases.  That’s the way the game went.  This week we’ll have a few more days so we’ll see how it goes.

ON EDMONTON RUSHING FOUR AND DROPPING EIGHT

CC:  That’s base defense.  They have a great front.  They put 44 men out and we put 44 men out.  Our 44 weren’t better than theirs and our coaches weren’t better than theirs on that night.  That’s football.  It’s not season-ending.  We just have to re-tool and go back and get ready.

People I talk to figure the seasons over for us. I can't believe that terrific defense we have just fell apart and will not recover. That was an ugly game to watch and the Riders were as Chamblin said outplayed and out coached. Remember, the quarterback is not the only one on the field that needs to make plays. Look for a way better defensive output this game because that is our strength this year. We have no choice, the offense is not where it needs to be this year so the defense and special teams are going to have… Read more »

Edmonton beat a team that played without a QB and they only scored 24 points. They are beatable but we need a QB.

Anyone who thinka taht our back up QB's are the answer is dreaming. Tino will never be good enough and we will see about Seth in 3-4 years

So who would be out there as any kind of veteran QB, or with any game action? All I can think of is Kerry Joseph, or Justin Goltz as current free agents. As for any trades Montreal, Troy Smith, or Alex Brink, either Als quarterbacks I could not see a trade happen until after we play them. Slim Pickens, am I missing anyone that could even help?

my guess is that tino gets one more start it will be a 3 strikes and youre out deal. the end of the ottawa game saved him for another week but, he regressed against edmonton versus improving. basically we've seen 2.5 stinkers out of 3 from Tino. If this week isnt better, that could be that for any real future with this team.

Concede first place. Lions and bombers loss helps. How can this team with this qb ever win in commonwealth? Are the riders risking a dd playoff comeback only to risk complete recovery for next year?

Forget Burris, go after Troy Smith before the trade deadline, he has experience and needs a change of scenery. Hate to see him just riding the bench wasting away in Montreal when we could use him.

When Troy Smith throws the ball farther than 10 yards, he has no idea where it's going. Would not like to see him here.

A very promising season is quickly swirling around in the crapper and about to go down the sewer. You win or lose in the league around your QB. Our QB(s) after DD have been nothing short of pathetic. yesterday the CFL panel rated Sunseri at the lowest in the CFL. How can you possibly win with that type of QB-ing? Why were we so unprepared? A couple weeks ago Wally Buono said you can't win in this league without a veteran QB. I think more than most I trust his judgement. With all the two and outs, how can a… Read more »

Stamps have played most the season with Mitchell as qb he is far from a veteran qb and they seem to be doing fine

Sunseri can't do the job. This season is over. Teams know our strength is the run and we have no one to throw it effectively. I don't see us winning again.

Riders also need to find some LB's.
Other than Hurl – the othere are crap. Peters is only good on the teams and the rest should not be in the CFL

Why don't we have our QB's rolling out, play action etc. Give the defense something to chase once in a while? I'm very disappointed in the play calling the last while, very generic. Doege is a runner, use him instead of the pylon.

Wally Buono said you can’t win in this league without a veteran QB

So without getting any experience and going through some growing pains, how does one become an experienced veteran QB? Buono took his lumps with Lulay, Pierce and demarco during his tenure as HC in BC too. He didn’t always have a plan back then either. The reason why they went and got Glen is they knew Lulay was going to be out for the first 6 games and they didn’t have a young developmental QB that was worth taking their lumps with (Beck is 30+)

BT's Christmas Wish List:

1. Good Backup QB
2. Linebacker who can make plays
3. Consistent Kicker
4. A receiver or two.

And, a partridge in a pear tree.

A poll suggestion would be: which league has worse officiating, the NFL or the CFL?

I agree with Steve! Season over! We'll start again next year with Darian and hope he can stay healthy.

Question; What does Chip Cox, Shea Emry, Soloman Elimimian, Juwan Simpson, J.C. Sherritt, Adam Bighill, Bear Woods Ian Wild and Kyries Hebert all have in common?

Answer; They're all linebackers that make an impact game after game. Oh yeh, none of them are Roughriders, we don't have an impact linebacker.

Brian Peters and Weldon Brown are right up there with the leading tacklers in the CFL. Where the Riders are coming up short is with an experienced middle linebacker. The Riders need to find the next Rey Williams type beast.

Gus; The Esks toyed with Peters and Brown all night long. I shutter to think what Corndog will do this week.

Clarkenstein, you can add no DC too. 299 yards rushing.
