LIONS 7 REDBLACKS 5

OTTAWA (CP) – It was ugly and costly, but in the end it was a win for the B.C. Lions.

A pair of Paul McCallum field goals were enough to lift the Lions to a 7-5 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night.

“It was one of the ugliest games I’ve seen in a long time,” McCallum said.

“We’ve got a lot of work to get going the way we should. When you hold a team to that few points your defence is doing well, but offensively you have to do better as a team.”

It was also a successful return to action for Lions quarterback Travis Lulay – at least until the last minute of the game, when Lulay left the field clutching his shoulder with 46 seconds remaining.

Lulay, who completed 18 of 27 passes for 167 yards on Friday, was making his first start in almost a year after injuring his throwing shoulder in a goal-line collision last September.

“He’s being evaluated by the doctors,” Lions coach Mike Benevides said of Lulay, who wasn’t made available to the media after the game. “We’ll find out more as the night goes on.”

Added running back Andrew Harris: “Honestly my heart sunk to my stomach. The guy had battled back so hard and he plays with so much heart.”

The team had hoped the six-year veteran would be ready following off-season shoulder surgery, but his first start didn’t come until the Lions (6-4) 10th game.

Lulay used his feet more than his arm in the win as he was the game’s leading rusher with 50 yards in his return to action.

The Redblacks (1-9) defence kept Lulay and the Lions out of the end zone all night, but the Redblacks offence struggled once again, getting just a field goal.

“We’ve got all the tools here, we just need to use them and both sides of the ball we need to get better, no matter what,” Redblacks defensive back Matt Albright said.

“We’re right there. We know it and we just have to push through it. You can never give up in football and it’s time to step up.”

Henry Burris completed 21 of 32 passes for 188 yards and an interception for Ottawa.

It really was a tough game to watch… As for Campbell as HC of Ottawa… Come on man grow a set already. In the first quarter at midfield and it was 3rd and 1 and he decides to punt? The team was encouraging him to go for it and he didn't… No that was not critical to the game but it set the tone for a game where Ottawa never did end up putting a drive together and the game was theirs of the taking as BC did not show up either. I know it is a first year team,… Read more »

there have been way to many ugly games in the CFL this season and what a surprise add in a 9th team and this happens… just goes to show the talent level is getting watered down across the league

CFL has been horrible this year. The only good game was the Winnipeg and Riders game last week. One single Rouge in the second half by Ottawa and BC. Nice work boys…..Awful. Thank god the NFL is back.

If I was the Ottawa Redblack GM, I would pluck Keith Tolston from the Rider practice squad to try and revitalize their running game (less than 50 yards total last night). The Redblacks would do better to go to a running attack like the Riders using Walker (if he gets healthy) and Tolston to switch off during a game.

Instead of throwing a truck load of cash on Burris, the Redblacks should have stuck with Kevin Glenn and went after some key receivers in free agency.

Boy that was hard to watch. But I did because I follow the CFL.

I wouldn't doubt we saw the end of a career last night. Lulay's shoulder injury looked bad.

@Kel, We agree! I PVR and watch every single CFL game. It's how I'm able to educate all of you. I have to say I did not finish watching that game, and that was the first time all year it happened. The talent level is not there on offense this year. This attributed to the Canadian ratio. There are just not enough impact Canadian receivers to go around. We've been through cycles where the CFL needs to reboot with new QBs, and that is understandable. The teams in the CFL have QBs, but nobody to get the ball to. I… Read more »

Feel for Lulay. It looks like the kind of shoulder that will dislocate when he sneezes.

At a time when the CFL needs an injection of star players, tough to see him go down.

david braily stole this game by calling the rain delay After ottawa had to try drive in that crap.. just sayin seemed awfully fishy that bc was allowed to wait.. ottawa was not.. smells fishy

Ottawa should have kept Kevin Glenn to push Henry Burris, but Burris as you know can't handle competition as evidenced by his time in Saskatchewan. They could have held onto Glenn and right now would be the time they could have cashed him in for a Receiver or O-Lineman, and that trade with BC would have generated even more fruit.

Game delay had nothing to do with the rain…. the game was suspended immediately AFTER lightening struck close to the Stadium…..And, it is not the Ref's decision, but rather the final decision to suspend/delay the game is made by CFL Operations, who work EVERY game… it is a Corporate Office decision in consultation with the Head Ref, but Corporate has the FINAL WORD

so you sound like your taking serious offence to this comment.. do you WORK for the cfl.. it is my OPINION that the cfl answers to senator brailey therefore it makes perfect SENSE that Corporate made the FINAL WORD.. thanks for clearing that up for me

The CFL didn't gain any fans with that debacle last night. In fact they probably lost some. I don't know what the answer is but I do know something has to be changed to put some offense into the game.
I don't buy Obama's theory about Canadians. Chevon Walker isn't a Canadian and he dropped a couple of passes and fumbled on the one foot line. American running backs are a dime a dozen so why they're not pursuing some is beyond me.

Obama: The day I need you to educate me is the day I quit this blog. You are the biggest moron I've never met. Thankfully never met by the way. How does your Mom live with you?

If you are looking for some fun CFL action, head to You Tube and catch some of the classic offensive battles from the 90's with Doug Flutie et al. If you want to hear some of the best colour commentary provided during a CFL game ever, check out the 1996 Grey Cup game.

All CFL fans should weep at the loss of a star QB like Lulay! The league is diminished by his absence and the absence due to injury of any starting QB.

It's a really F-up'd day in the CFL when Obama is so Delusional he thinks he's educating people. Time after time his ramblings have been shot to hell the next day with Teams doing nothing even close to what he said they would do.Then on top of that when you have people that disagree with his points and are actually correct. He calls them a lower form of life. The best example of late was when Obama went on and on about how Dressler was going to go to Ottawa because he no longer had anything to shoot for in SK.Dressler's… Read more »

Dear Reginald of Regina,

The Obama guy means well (LOL) but has ZERO credibility. He just likes to provoke guys like you. Just skim over his comments (occasionally good for a laugh, especially with his political rantings) and don't react. He is counting on you, Woz and others to take him serious and give him his jollies.

Truly feel terrible as a CFL fan that Lulay's career likely done.
