Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats Hockey Club is pleased to announce the hiring of Darrin Mckechnie as Assistant Coach.

The Pats alum joins Head Coach and Senior VP of Hockey Operations John Paddock and fellow assistant coach Dave Struch behind the bench for the upcoming season.

“I’m honoured to be brought on board by the organization I played for,” said Darrin McKechnie.  “It’s like a dream come true.  I never really thought this could happen this fast.  For any coach in the Regina area, the Pats are looked at so highly and to be a part of it I’m very excited, especially being an alumni.”

McKechnie was the head coach of the Regina Capitals of the SSMHL last season, leading the team to the Saskatchewan Midget-AA Championship after a 24-6-6 Regular Season.  For the 2012-13 campaign, Darrin coached the Regina Pat Blues of the SBAAHL to the best record in the South Division at 22-4-1.

Prior to coaching in minor hockey, McKechnie was an assistant coach for the University of Regina Cougars from 1996-2000. The Regina resident played with the Pats from 1986-1988, amassing 164 points (82G, 82A) over a 144 game WHL career.

Following his junior days, McKechnie went on to play for the University of Regina where he is third all-time in scoring with 169 points (76G, 93A) in 132 games.  McKechnie’s 76 goals and 93 assists are both second in school history.  During his time with the Cougars (1988-1993), Darrin was named the Canada West and CIS Most Sportsmanlike Player (1992) and a Canada West Second Team All-Star (1993).

“We are extremely excited to have Darrin McKechnie join our coaching staff,” commented Regina Pats President Todd Lumbard.  “As a former player Darrin has first-hand knowledge of what it means to be a Pat.  His tireless work ethic combined with the ability to teach and connect with players will be great assets to our team.  We had Darrin in our sights for several weeks and are thankful the pieces fell into place allowing him to join our staff!”

Following his time at the University of Regina, McKechnie joined the Regina Police Service where he is currently a Staff Sergeant and has been serving for 21 years.

I take issue with the Regina Pats employing members of the Regina Police Service. It puts them in a conflict of interest situation.

maybe the Pats will acually become a contender in the near future. Any time Ive gone to a Pats game the last few years it was always a strange enviroment. Twighlight zone's wierdest episode. Why you ask; because of the things i would see. Green alligators, long neck geese some humpty back camels and chimpanzee's. Cats and rats and elephants. Only missing the unicorn Too many times I couldnt finish the food I had purchased because of something very unapitizing going on all around. So i stopped buying any food itemsIs junior hockey that way in all the other locations? Snotty… Read more »

This hire is not especially great for the Pats. He is a part-time coach and that rarely works well. They have tried this before with other RPS members with not particularly good results. I suspect Struch's contract is significant enough that paying another guy full time may not have been in the cars. These arrangements are not the best and we will need to see how they materialize.

Conflict of interest? Obvious that somebody doesn't know the meaning of "conflict of interest". Maybe do some research before you comment on a public forum.

I would like to apply for the job as administrator on here and believe me you would never ever read the "GARBAGE" that the "sickos" send into this site.

Firefighters are there to do good. Cops sign up for the job to overcompensate for shortfalls. They crave respect and suffer from a lot of insecurity. The large majority of them are no different than the criminal element they investigate.

Those are two fine looking wingers for Coach Paddock, they are two of the most respected and talented teammates I've played with. Both will play key roles in a much higher player skill level and puck possession team, which is what I've understood most posters on here are looking for.

Their work ethic and values both on and off the ice have never been in question, which leads to excited times now for this coaching staff to start building together.

It is understood any analysis put forward contrary to police officers being upstanding citizens and the beacon of humanity will not be posted.

Duly noted.

It is also understood organized labour within the construction trades can be stereotyped and be open season on the radio show. This being done while being a sponsor of said radio program (IEBW).
