DRESSLER SHUTOUT AT CAROLINA

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Cam Newton made a successful return following ankle surgery, Jonathan Stewart ran for two touchdowns and Carolina beat Kansas City 28-16 in NFL preseason play Sunday evening.

Newton completed 4 of 9 passes for 65 yards and led a pair of touchdown drives before exiting late in the second quarter with Carolina (1-1) up 14-6.

Stewart ran for 26 yards on four carries and made a strong case to be the Panthers’ goal-line back – if not their primary ball carrier – with scoring runs of 3 and 2 yards.

Alex Smith was 14 of 22 for 127 yards for Kansas City (1-1). Rookie Aaron Murray’s first NFL pass resulted in a 43-yard touchdown strike, but he also had an interception.

Former Roughrider Weston Dressler made the trip to Charlotte with the Chiefs and suited up wearing #13, but did not get a touch.  Nine Chiefs caught passes on Sunday evening, but Weston wasn’t one of them.

Sorry for Weston, but it does not look good for him as a Kansas City or more so an NFL player. On the other hand I would love to see him wearing one of those new uniforms or even an old one for that matter, just get him back if we get the chance.

Won't be long, but Weston will be heading north soon. I am sure the Riders can make him a good long-term offer. Signing Weston and then a new deal for John Chick will be important moves by Brendan Taman.

I was pulling for Weston to make the NFL, but this is more than the writing on the wall. One touch last week and no touches tonight likely mean that he will be released soon. He will then have a 10 day window to catch on with another team in the NFL, before coming back to the CFL. Now, if he does come back, remember that he is not binded to the Riders. He is a free agent that will get serious offers from around the league. Brendan Taman needs to make sure that he signs him, regardless of the… Read more »

We will welcome him back as a strong addition to our failing pass game by labour day.

REDBLACKS will offer him the house……the car….the whole damn city! They have the cap space, do the Riders without moving someone?

To the ANON who says Weston could go to Ottawa… or anywhere else for that matter…. Do you really think a guy that wears #13 in honour of Rider fans would go anywhere else? Give your head a shake then think about it!!

He must be the Riders MVP. The passing o is putrid and the offensive team is the same except for Dressler and Sheets. Given decent production from the current RB's, then Dressler is the man

It won't matter if Weston comes back unless the play selection changes. So far this year it's been play after play of Darian standing in the pocket under pressure. How about some plays that have a designed roll out? In the past, that is when Doubles was most effective.

Darian did well last year because they brought in a QB coach. Now, Khari is gone and so is Dressler, so Darian hesitates. If you watch Ricky Ray or even Brink, they release the ball fast. Darian needs another mentor to help him.

You could have saved some time watching the KC game if you went to the Chiefs website and looked at the depth chart. Dressler is listed 6th (last) in his receiver position and is sitting in the bottom 3 of 13 receiver spots. Considering teams only carry 5 receivers, sometimes 6 if they are special teams demons, you can deduce that Dressler has no hope to make the team and is a camp body until the first cuts next weekend. He’ll make it to the last cuts if the Chiefs have some injuries to receivers or have already decided who… Read more »

i said all along that Dressler was not NFL material and this will further prove my point. He is not big enough and most definitely not strong enough with his size. Remember a guy like Kenton Keith went to the NFL and had to seriously bulk up to even have a chance then when he was cut finally by the NFL came back to the CFL but his big stature was useless in the CFL and played himself completely out of football. I always wished Dressler the best but i knew he would not make the cut but he was… Read more »

i heard the Redblacks are after him hard… I agree, why would you wear the #13 jersey tohonor the Rider fans and then bolt to another CFL team. the Riders will pay him a good buck when he returns, and besides, Regina is close to home for him. I watched the game and yes, he was invisible. He's up against receivers who are bigger and faster than him. too bad they just dont cut him now and put Weston out of his misery.

If Taman re-lands Dressler he should be given a 25 year extension.

Ottawa will over pay by 50-75K just like they did with Burris.

I think the Riders would be up there in throwing serious money at him. Weston appears to be a team guy, rather than a greed guy.Regina is really close to home for him, so I think if the bucks were close he'd come back to Riders. Besides, he'd be on a winning team rather than a sinking ship if he signed with the Redblacks.

I love Dress, but wearing #13 acknowledges the past. It is not a commitment to the future. Money will talk the loudest.

Sorry folks, the small amount of time these guys have in their PRO careers and the even smaller (in terms of other pro leagues)salaries CFLers make.

Weston and his agents will look to where they can make the most base salary, playoff dollars and endorsements deals.

You might as well have spelled out Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Taman should be checking out endorsements for Weston. That could be the difference maker. We need some Saskatchewan business to commit themselves to sign him up for appearances etc.

If Dressler is back, he'll be a Rider. If he's not a Rider, id expect to see him in blue and gold.
