A grand-slam home run by Brian Frazier capped off a nine-run 7th inning for the Regina Red Sox, as they pummelled the Yorkton Cardinals 16-2 in game one of the best-of-five WMBL first-round playoffs series.

Denver Diefenbach pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while striking out eight for the win. Jeff Pool took the loss for Yorkton, giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, and striking out 10.

The Red Sox and Cardinals will meet for game two on Sunday night at Currie Field. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.

Saskatchewan used a big first quarter to cruise past Ottawa 38-14. The Roughriders led 24-0 in the first following a Darian Durant touchdown pass and two more TD’s by Will Ford. The win moves the Riders to 3-2 while the Redblacks fell to 1-4.

P-K Subban and the Canadiens found some middle ground at last. Montreal agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the star defenceman reportedly worth 72 million dollars (U-S). The deal was made before an arbitrator could decide on a one-year deal following yesterday’s hearing.

The Blue Jays suffered an embarrassing 8-2 loss to lowly Houston. Jon Singleton scored an inside-the-park home run for the Astros after a call was reversed. Jose Altuve scored the go-ahead run on back-to-back throwing errors by Toronto. And Robbie Grossman robbed a potential game-tying home run by Jays slugger Juan Francisco.

To say it was an eventful game wouldn’t do the Mets and Giants justice. New York beat San Francisco 4-2 after pitcher Jacob deGrom carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. Giants starter Jake Peavy had a perfect game in the works until he allowed four runs in the seventh. And a fan was hospitalized after falling over an outfield wall before the game.

Sergio Garcia has a three-stroke lead at the Bridgestone Invitational. Garcia held his advantage with a 67 despite waiting through a three-hour storm delay. The Spaniard is being chased by Rory McIlroy, who is on fire after winning the British Open.

PK Subban; highly over-rated, the Canadian media got him on the Olympic team but I loved the way Mike Babcock used him. (Or didn't use him) But look at the team photo after they won, guess who wormed his way into the centre of the flick. If PK ever went to court charged with having humility, he'd have to say, "Not guilty, your honour."

A good and proud hockey player. What's wrong with that. 'Wormed his way ….' You were there? Explain how he did that.

Well I'll explain that the other 'fringe players' were on the fringe of the picture.
