RIDERS INVITE ANOTHER QUARTERBACK

BRADENTON, FL – The Saskatchewan Roughriders are set to open their 2014 free agent camp here at the IMG Academy on Saturday and at least one more quarterback has been added to the mix.

Jon Jennings, who’s graduating this year from Saginaw Valley State, will join the group of quarterbacks in Bradenton which already includes Darian Durant, Tino Sunseri and Seth Doege.

For more on Jennings, here’s an article from www.mlive.com:

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Saginaw Valley State University’s quarterback-wide receiver tandem of Jon Jennings and Jeff Janis spent much of their college careers inseparably-linked.

As they put up record-breaking numbers the past three seasons for the Cardinals, you rarely could bring up one’s name without mentioning the other.

Despite the connection, the pair’s path to the NFL will be quite different.

Jennings’ numbers speak for themselves.

He threw for 3,284 yards with 30 touchdowns and ran for 470 yards with 12 touchdowns. He led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in yards, yards per game and touchdowns on his way to earning the conference’s player of the year honors.

For his career, he set new GLIAC records with 9,546 yards passing and 10,700 yards total offense.

Jennings will get a chance to prove to NFL talent evaluators those numbers aren’t a fluke when he plays in the Second Annual College All-Star Bowl at 6 p.m. Friday at Furman University.

The game is a key test for the Cardinals senior as he tries to put himself in position to get drafted in the late rounds of May’s NFL Draft.

“I want to take advantage of the moment,” Jennings said. “I want to prove I belong against Division I talent. It’s a job interview, and the goal is to try to outshine everybody.”

In February, he said he was eager to make it through preparations to get back on the field for his first game action since SVSU’s 40-7 first round playoff loss to Grand Valley State.

“I’ve been throwing the ball pretty well, but my main focus has been putting on a little weight,” Jennings said. “I’m excited to finally get back on the field.”

Jennings’ playing weight was around 205 pounds, and he hopes to get up to 220-225 by the draft.

“Gaining weight feels like having another job,” Jennings said. “It’s all about calories, calories, calories (laughing). You try to eat food that’s good for, but that can be tough, so you try to maintain a balanced diet. I’m trying to get as big as I can, while staying as sharp as I can.”
