BRANDON UP 3-0, WHEAT KING HOSPITALIZED

The return of Daniel Wapple to Regina’s crease wasn’t enough to get the Pats back into their first round series with Brandon.

Jayce Hawryluk’s hattrick goal was the winner with 4:50 remaining to give Brandon a 5-4 victory Wednesday evening in Westman Communications Group Place.  With the win, the Wheat Kings now lead the best-of-seven WHL East Conference Quarterfinal three-games-to-none.

Wapple, who missed the first two games with an ankle injury, made 20 saves in a losing cause. He didn’t look like the same goaltender who backstopped the Pats to a first-place finish in the regular year. It was clear he was still hampered by the injury.

Regina blew a 4-1 first period lead in this one, as they led 4-3 after 20 minutes and the game was tied 4-4 after 40.

Brandon’s Jordan Papirny stopped 29 of 33 shots as the Wheat Kings went 0/2 on the powerplay and 2/4 killing penalties.  Regina’s goals came from Dryden Hunt (2), Jesse Zgraggen and Carter Hansen.

Jayce Hawryluk reportedly collapsed in the Wheat Kings’ dressing room after the game and was rushed to hospital.  Coach and GM Kelly McCrimmon released a statement saying they have not been able to pinpoint the cause of Hawryluk’s collapse however he’s resting comfortably.

Brandon will go for the sweep on Friday night in Game 4 in a 6:30 pm Sask time faceoff on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 6:05 pm).

Bring out the brooms, the Pats are done.
Game one the Big Red were rocked, games two they were white washed and tonight they blue that game. Any other colour they can wear? Black for blackout, winning no games in the playoffs.
Just like Saskatoon last year, finish first and get swept.

40 years from out last mem cup and 34 years and counting for a league championship. It might be better off to have the Pats leave, and get an expansion team. Might be faster to build a winner that way.

Pats were 5-35-5-1 in the last 10 years playing in Brandon according to a Brandon website, so what are the chances they win a game there?

They blew their chance tonight to get back into it. They come out, get a 4-1 lead in the first, and they can't score again and blow the lead losing it late. Brandon was nearly in the same situation, up 4-0 in game 1, they won 7-3.

One team is good and playing with confidence, one team is just not that good. Figure out which is which, it should be really easy.

could Chandler Stephenson look more disinterested in the game? If he thinks he has a shot at the making the show floating around for three periods in a playoff game he is in for a surprise.
Maybe he will be back in Regina next season after all.

Yep Pats were dismantled by a 16 and 17 year old line of Wheaties, while Klimchuk and Stephenson go a combined -4…pretty well tells the tale all right. Zgraggen gets caught in a couple of tough situations and no one backs him up. Leier has a puck bounce off him into our own net for the tying short-handed goal…a valiant attempt to block a goal mouth pass but no reason to go down to block it. It wasn't in the stars again! Tough tough loss.

Anger is long gone. It's just sad. Brandon is younger than us too. They have a whole pile of 17 year olds. They will be kicking our asses for the next two years too.
It all comes down to the ability to recognize talent in the players being drafted and to develop that talent. We suck at it. McCrimmon is great at it. Everything else is window dressing.

Hey what's that thing hanging over Center ice in the picture above. Brandon needs to get rid of that if they want to keep up with the brilliant thinkers who run the Brandt Center.

Just goes to show you what proper executive and ownership can do for you. For example, GM Kelly McCrimmon, Brandon teams have never been too far out of it with him at the helm. Something we haven't had here in 15 years.

The Pats probably won't be able to climb out of this deep hole but Brandon will NOT get the sweep.

Hope Hawryluk is ok. That's scary.

I will cheer for swift current most definitely being a pats fan I don't think I could stomach cheering for either moose jaw or Saskatoon though. Pats aren't out yet and to the commenters on klimchuck and Stephenson having their eyes on playing somewhere else now well I have this to comment I wouldn't be surprised people these days show no commitment to anything just themselves sad really.

Tough loss for the Pats. What I don't understand was the goaltending change. I totally understand putting Wapple in for a team boost but the decision not to dress MacAuley is baffling to me, how could they do that to the kid, unacceptable in my mind. With the way they are playing defense in front of the goalies it wont matter who they put in there.

Do that to the kid? He's an adult by age, in an extremely competitive league.

Look, he was a great SJHL Tier 2 goalie. He moved up to the WHL, and reached his limit.

…here are the differences in team philosophies… Brandon – 1 players who played for another WHL teamRegina – 8 players who played for another WHL team …while we give away draft picks to get players their previous teams didn't want; Brandon homegrows all of their talent. They are younger, faster and more talented. We will need to start another reclamation project all over again next season. …some people didn't want "mind numbing" or "eye glazing" hockey i.e. Vanstone. They forgot about defence and played run and gun without the talent to play it. We don't look to good now without… Read more »

When Sports Cage had on Craig Button yesterday that was just a great interview. This is not a post to slam the Regina Pats, but it's more to shed light on something Craig Button communicated on. Aside from the hyjinx of this Saskatoon group, basically Craig Button will not recommend a name, but he'll provide insight as to what the WHL in Saskatoon has to offer, and what a new GM will need to have a handle on. I want to recap: – The GM will need to be able to sell Saskatoon as a place to play hockey, live… Read more »
