CROSBY BACKS KUNITZ SELECTION

VANCOUVER (CP) – Sidney Crosby has a pretty good idea of what it takes to be part of Canada’s Olympic hockey roster.

He never had any doubt that his linemate with the Pittsburgh Penguins deserved a spot on the team heading to Sochi.

Regina’s Chris Kunitz was named to Canada’s 25-man roster on Tuesday, one of the more controversial selections announced by executive director Steve Yzerman.

Critics suggest that the 34-year-old was picked largely because of his chemistry with Crosby on Pittsburgh’s top line, but the Penguins captain said Kunitz was more than deserving.

“As a teammate, as a friend, I see what he does every day and I have a great appreciation for what he brings to our team and the type of player he is,” said Crosby. “If anyone could have a good idea I think it’s me, spending every day with him, playing with him.

“I think he’s earned every right to be a part of this team.”

Crosby, who scored in overtime to lift Canada past the United States in the gold-medal game at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, had trouble finding suitable linemates early in that tournament.

And while the Cole Harbour, N.S., native was adamant that Kunitz earned his spot, the player in question said lining up next to Canada’s biggest talent night in and night out didn’t hurt his chances.

“It helps a lot. I’ve played with a lot of good players,” said Kunitz, a former Melville Millionaire, who played for his country at the 2008 world championship. “Playing with Sid kind of elevates that a little bit more but going out there every night trying to focus on your day job put me in the right mindset to get my foot in the door for Team Canada.

“You’ve got to go out and produce every night and that’s something I’ve worked hard at – trying to be consistent throughout the years.”

Kunitz has heard the doubters who believe he’s only on the team because of Crosby.

“Everyone’s got the right to their opinion,” said Kunitz. “Our coaches can change the lineup whenever they want.  I’ve got to go out and earn that and I think I’ve done that so far.”

Kunitz was a key part to the 2007 Stanley Cup Champs in Anaheim. Instant chemistry with Crosby and I'm sure he'll remember his days playing with former team mates Perry and Getzlaf quickly ! 2 good Regina boys !

Chris Kunitz has been a top line NHL player for many years, and long before Sidney Crosby came around. I watch a lot of Pittsburgh games, and Kunitz is not the Jari Kurri/Bernie Nichols ride the coat tails type of players that were on Gretzky's line. When Kunitz plays with Crosby the easiest description would be to compare them to Adam Oates/Brett Hull, but with a lot more grit and sandpaper. Kunitz can play any style, he's tough, and extremely hard working. If you think "chemistry" doesn't count then you don't know hockey. A Centerman needs his Winger and a… Read more »
