SWEDEN 3 CANADA 0

ANGELHOLM, Sweden – Marcus Hogberg stopped all 21 shots he faced as Sweden shut out Canada 3-0 on Sunday in an exhibition warmup before the under-20 men’s world hockey championship.

Andre Burakowsky scored and added an assist for Sweden, while Lukas Bengtsson and Andreas Johnson had goals as well.

Jake Paterson made 31 saves in net for Canada.

Burakowsky opened the scoring for Sweden at the 2:37 mark of the second period. A backhand pass by Jacob de la Rose from behind the goal confused Paterson, leaving a wide-open net for Burakowsky.

Canadian defenceman was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for kneeing forward Erik Karlsson. Karlsson did not return to the ice after the incident.

Johnson took advantage of Dumba’s penalty, making it 2-0 with a second left in the five-minute power play. The Swede scored from the slot, one-timing a pass from behind the goal-line by Alexander Wennberg.

Bengtsson also scored on the power play 2:35 into the third period.

The Canadians struggled in the first period, getting outshot 16-5 but the score was tied 0-0 at the first intermission.

Burakowsky had earned the ire of the Canadian delegation before the exhibition game when he asserted that the Swedish team would be stronger in the tournament.

“I know what kind of team Canada will be showing up with and if I take a look at what they have and compare them to what we have, I would have to say on paper, we have a much better team,” said Burakowsky.

The world junior and the Olympics will prove that hockey is no longer Canada's game. Hockey defined as skating, puck handling, team play and strategy on an ice surface supporting talent and speed.
Canada has left the real hockey to be played by the socialist Europeans by keeping the smaller ice surface featuring stick work , fighting, clutch and grab, intimidation, individualism, and beer league strategy. Dump and chase has been surpassed by anticipation and reaction.
Canadian hockey is nothing more than scripted wrestling, athletic but not sporting.

It is not 72 anymore.

Agree with anon #1. CDN hockey is chip and chase. Cycle the puck. Chip pucks in, chip pucks out. It is no match for skilled players on a large ice surface.

Get used to it folks. The world didn't just catch Canada they passed us. Those countries across the pond all think you should go to the net and try to score instead of dumping the puck in the corner and trying to cycle it. It's hard to get left in the dust when you're on the ice but Canada did and it'll happen again in the Olympics.

Anyone look at the top scorers in the nhl this year, or what Canada's forward depth will be in the Olympics? We have no skill?? If you want hockey to truly be international and successful around the world, other nations need to have success too. I would still say we are the best hockey nation, but I enjoy international events more now because the competition is so fierce.
My main concern for Canada of late is the lack of goaltending development.

NHL hockey has a huge problem.
1. Defensive schemes, in including the way they play offence in a defensive way, are winning games.
2. Fans are largely bored with defensive hockey.

I think we can all agree that this is Darians fault.
