DRESSLER EYEING NFL

Wednesday was a big day for Weston Dressler.  The star slotback was one of five Roughriders named to the CFL’s first All-Star team, but he also revealed he has a series of NFL tryouts lined up in the coming weeks.

“We started with those talks and hopefully by the end of the week I’m planning on having some workouts lined up,” Dressler reported.  “Really at that point it’s just waiting on the workouts and taking it from there after that point.”

Dressler was asked with which NFL teams his agent his speaking.

“Ummm, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say so I won’t say anything.”

The Bismarck, ND product was further pressed on how many teams have made their interest known.

“There’s a few right now,” Dressler continued.  “There’s a few that just seem like talks and there are a few that seem very interested.  It’s hard to put a number on which ones I’ll look at seriously and which ones are just talk right now.”

Dressler’s contract with the Roughriders expires February 15 but he said he’ll exhaust all NFL opportunities before re-signing in the CFL.  He declined to confirm that he’ll re-sign with Saskatchewan, but said team management knows where his heart is.

This has been in the wind for a while. He's 28 and if he is ever going to give it a shot then this the time. He is free to explore options and evidently he is going to do just that. He very likely won't be the only Rider who will chase his dream this year. Much can be said about the quality of the players we have in our system. Given the same circumstances there isn't one among us who wouldn't do the same thing. None of those who take their shot should in any way be chastised. It's… Read more »

Can't blame the kid for looking at the NFL cash, but if you get a tryout we'll see you back in Sept., that is if you can still walk.

Weston gave the riders six wonderful years where he gave 100% day in and day out at practice and in games. He travelled the province on speaking tours and is a true professional. We could only dream that every player was weston. He therefore gets mt 100% support to pursue his dream…. He owes us nothing. Of couse i wish he could stay with the riders for 6 more years and along with darian lead us into the new stadium. But whatever happens i will be there in 15 years to see him welcomed into the plaza as one of… Read more »

Good luck and give it your best shot! If it doesn't work out, hopefully Riders make him the leagues highest paid receiver, which he deserves. and hopefully the salary cap goes up so these guys get paid better.

I wouldn't be surprised that, if he doesn't make it in the NFL, he re-signs back here right away. He's an excellent member of this community and part of the core of players that needs to stay intact in order to stay a contender.

Can't blame him at all for taking a shot at the NFL though. Who wouldn't.

Wally always seemed to let his guys in BC try the NFL, and if it didn't work out they usually came back to his team. That often involved some pain and adjustment, but he built good teams and had good players.

I don't mind at all if the Riders let people chase NFL dreams. Shows we have a strong organization.

The only reason Weston is as good as he is has to be his determination to be the best that he can be and that starts by having goals . Who are we to tell him what he can and cannot do? If he has a goal to go to the NFL he owes it to himself to take the first step. Good luck Weston and if it doesn't work out I hope you come back to Saskatchewan and continue doing what you do best in our province. Either way you are a fantastic football player and an even better… Read more »

I can see why he would want to check it out but if he leaves us, there are going to be a lot of very sad Rider fans. The selfish side of me says "don't leave us Weston".

Bye bye Weston Dressler, it's a business. No hard feelings as you pursue higher goals/endevours to your personal professional football career and life, thanx, and sincere good luck.
