JONES RETURNING TO CFL?
The NFL’s Cleveland Browns fired first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens immediately following their season-ending 33-23 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.
The Browns finished the season at 6-10 and are missing the playoffs for a 17th consecutive season.
Among those on Kitchens’ staff is veteran CFL coach Chris Jones, who spent 17 seasons in Canada. It’s reasonable to assume that the firing of Kitchens will include the majority of his staff.
Should Jones look northward to resume his coaching career, there are three teams potentially looking for a defensive coordinator. BC, Edmonton and Toronto all have new head coaches and have yet to announce their full staffs.
The fallout of the Kitchens move will be interesting to watch in the days and weeks ahead.

The Riders obstinately and rightly retained Chris Jones contractual rights so he’ll be back in on of all things 2020 as previous. It’s a odd circumstance to retain a management contract but uppers knew what had, they had a bonofide football winner when they hired Mr. Chris Jones, a true football success from A to Z. Now the Riders can continue unopposed with the on field business of winning a cup title on home turf with Mr. Jones at the helm, he gets to finish his team build. Also … many a excellent football player to follow him north making… Read more »
I’m not so sure your correct on Jones must come back to The riders I think that only applies to players coming back but I could be wrong , and there is no room for him with the team as the GM and coaching staff is in place , plus with the salary cap on coaches and operations there is ZERO way the riders could stay under the cap with Jones back ZERO
As reported by Justin Dunk, Jones is under contract to Cleveland through 2020 (which means little). But what it does mean is that I can’t see how he can be contractually obligated to the Riders AND Cleveland through 2020. Once a coach is released from his contract they’re gone.
Can’t see how that works. He was released to go to Cleveland, full stop I would say. If the Riders are somehow trying to hold on to Jones, I would question Reynolds’ acumen. Thanks, Jeremy for a job well done & first place but all along we have Jones’ contractual rights so step aside, make room. And I suppose to keep his contractual rights they are still paying him? I don’t think you can just obligate anyone without doing so. It’s not a very smart thing to do for all kinds of reasons. New regime – move on. If you’re… Read more »
I’m starting to think it would be AMAZING if Jones ends up back with the Eskimos as DC and asst head coach as he and Milanovich are freinds from their days working together in Toronto .I am already super excited with Milanovich as our coach and if we could add Jones that would definately be a WOW factor ,at the same time it’s hard to believe Jones would be able to be paid enough under the ew salary cap for coaches and staff.I guess it doesn’t hurt to dream big .
It could happen. I’m not sure the money would be an issue. If Jones comes back, in a year he would be everyone’s top choice for HC & maybe GM/HC. Hervey could be in trouble in BC if he has another year like this one & that could happen. There’s a lot of holes there. The Als still need a GM & the 3 non-playoff teams may be looking for change. The logical place would be Edmonton, re-establish his cred for less pay for a year – or Argos with a rookie HC who, like Claybrooks, may not succeed. The… Read more »
I was really hoping Chris Jones and Cleveland would be successful. In years past I hoped Marc Trestman and Scott Milanovich would be successful in the NFL, as it provides a good spot light on the CFL when our guys have success down South. Unfortunately Freddie Kitchens was a complete mess which made the rest of the coaching staff how to put it……”marginally successful”. Chris Jones was not the problem in Cleveland and not even close to being the problem by a long shot. He should get a chance to stay there or with another team. The penalties, lack of… Read more »
Why in the world would we want Jones back in Sask.? He only alienated half the fan base,
and (tick)ed off the other half.
Much better off with our men Craig and J.O., friendly guys we can relate to. We moved on nicely with these guys.
Carpet bagger Jones had his day here, and would be as welcome back as snow in July.
I say DONT mess with what we have going in Saskatchewan, a great coaching staff, management is great, the fans love this current riders line up, let’s just keep building and move on!
When I saw that it was Peterson, I had to read it just for the laugh and the misinformation he spouts… I was right.
