RIDERS SIGN JAMES FRANKLIN
3DownNation’s Justin Dunk reports the Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed free agent QB James Franklin to a 1-year contract.
The 28-year old Missouri product is entering his 6th season in the CFL, having spent 2015-2017 in Edmonton and 2018-2019 in Toronto. According to Dunk, Franklin earned $250,000 and $272,000 the past two seasons with the Argos.
The 6’2″, 235 lb pivot has never been totally successful at grabbing the starter’s reins, although he was given plenty of opportunity in Toronto. In his 5 seasons, Franklin has thrown a total of 4305 yards, 23 TDs and 16 INTs.
After trading away Zach Collaros in 2019, the Roughriders’ QBs were Cody Fajardo, Isaac Harker and Bryan Bennett.
Someone will have to go.

Mark my words from this day forward, James Franklin will succeed Cody Fajardo as the #1 Rider qb under his old coach Jason Maas tutelage.
Never had anyone in his corner in Toronto. Really had a good relationship with Maas. Maybe this is what he needs. As for Fajardo, maybe he gets rested in games that get out of hand, one way or the other.
This MIGHT be O’Day’s most questionable move to date. I would’ve been much happier to continue to develop Harker, even if it meant taking my lumps early in his career. The kid has an arm and I really liked his attitude and the flashes he showed when he did get an opportunity to play. Bennett was a special teams demon and the Riders lost Gagne today. Not certain if the short yardage problems last year were Bennett’s or MacAdoo’s but I think the Riders would’ve been better served saving the cap dollars spent on Franklin and retaining the 2 cdn… Read more »
