FOOTBALL FRIDAY RECAP: THE LEGENDS JOIN!

We went deep on the latest CFL and NFL topics with  veterans from both leagues on Episode #264 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) More on the Riders’ financial situation, 2) Solomon Elimimian’s comments on the history of CFL business, 3) James Wilder Jr.’s retirement, 4) Will the CFL play?, 5) Will the NFL play?, and 6) Tom Brady ignores NFLPA advisements not to hold group workouts.
  • Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John “Frenzy” Lynch joined the bunker in Segment 2 and the guys debated the financial situation of the Riders. They compared it to the Telethon eras of the 1980s and 1990s and how this is different. They agreed that those were held just to save the Riders while this time around, the entire CFL is in big trouble. They concluded that Saskatchewan has funded a big portion of the CFL over the years (including transfer payments to other teams) but CFL business has grown to the point that Saskatchewan can’t cover the brunt anymore.
  • NFL/CFL/NCAA alum Tori Gurley made his long awaited in-studio appearance and covered topics related to all leagues. The former Packer, Brown, Argonaut, Blue Bomber and Gamecock guaranteed that the NFL will play in 2020, citing TV revenue and all that’s at stake. Gurley explained that there are 4,000 NFL jobs for players, and tens of thousands of players looking for a shot. Tori answered a shotgun blast of questions from John Frenzy including the Aaron Rodgers/Jordan Love saga, Mike McCarthy in Dallas, the Seahawks eyeing Antonio Brown and Josh Gordon and much more. Frenzy said this was one of the greatest days of his life.
  • Later in Hour 2 Tori headed outside to brew up a Southern barbecue for RP Show staff along with his in-laws, who hail from Strasbourg, SK. Gurley currently is an analyst on an NFL betting show on AXS-TV, the American specialty TV channel owned by Anthem Sports and Mark Cuban.
  • Canadian Football Hall of Famer and former Washington Redskin Doug Brown joined the show from Winnipeg to offer his take on all these topics. He admitted to being a little depressed since Friday night was supposed to be the Blue Bombers’ home-opener against Calgary. Brown reflected on the Bombers’ 2019 Grey Cup championship season and told some unique stories of how Winnipeggers celebrated the end of the drought. Doug revealed that he watches the RP Show everyday.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should the Toronto Raptors retire Vince Carter’s number? (The original Air Canada retired on Thursday). At press time nearly 60% of respondents said yes.
  • Saskatchewan Rattlers President & CEO Lee Genier joined the show from Saskatoon to outline the CEBL’s Return To Play and the 4-week long championship tournament to be held at the Meridian Centre in St. Catherines. Lee divulged that teams have drawn up two separate rosters: with Americans, and without. He also said selected games will be shown on CBC-TV and all games will be streamed on the CBC Gem app.
  • Tori Gurley won the Rockstar of the Day award for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions by acclimation. Thursday’s vote was won by NFL super agent Leigh Steinberg.
