WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: EPISODE #300!

It was a banner day at The Rod Pedersen Show as we aired our 300th episode! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) NHL great Dale Hawerchuk passes at age 57, 2) Tuesday in the NHL saw Vegas advance, Washington stay alive and Calgary/Montreal pushed to the brink, 3) If the CFL is to improve, what does it need?, 4) NBA Playoff notes, 5) The Blue Jays are on the verge of sweeping Baltimore, and 6) Tim Hortons launches a line of NHL collective sticks.
  • TSN 1260 Edmonton’s Dustin Nielson joined the show to talk about the CFL season cancellation and what improvements can be made. Dusty asked the question on Twitter and got over 300 responses which is proof the CFL matters to Canadians, and Edmontonians in particular. The suggestions included a CFL video game, marketing the players better and celebrating Canadiana. Nielson also touched on the Oilers’ ouster in the Play-In Round and said while the players didn’t come through, head coach Dave Tippett should get some heat as well.
  • The guys reported that with the CFL season cancellation, there’s been a rise in interest in the CFL SIM league. Therefore they’ve created the Twitter account @CFLSIM which will have all the latest info including stats, schedules, polls and discussion.
  • The Roughriders released WR Max Zimmermann Wednesday to sign in the Finnish pro league and Edmonton WR Greg Ellingson has hinted he may opt for the XFL. This created debate over where the CFL is headed with its players. News broke later in the day that CFL players under contract in 2020 will be eligible for the Canada Employment Wage Subsidy.
  • In honour of Dale Hawerchuk, the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: What’s the best Team Canada in history – 1972 Summit Series, 1987 Canada Cup, 2002 Winter Olympics or 2010 Winter Olympics? At press time the 1987 Canada Cup squad was leading.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by CFL great Nik Lewis. Nik talked about what improvements the CFL can make and that includes treating the players better. The crew talked about all aspects of the CFL and then RP and Nik spun off into a discussion on their beloved Dallas Cowboys and the outlook for 2020.
  • SJHL President Bill Chow joined the show from his home in Prince Albert and reported a meeting with provincial health officials planned for Tuesday was postponed. As a 30-year member of the P.A. City Police, Bill cautioned that hockey isn’t a priority for the provincial government at this time, and that the health of Saskatchewan citizens is. He reported that the targeted start date for the 2020-2021 SJHL season is October 9, but is subject to change.
