TUESDAY RUNDOWN: HALL OF FAMER NIK LEWIS & GARY LAWLESS!
Tuesday was a big news day and we were on air for it all on Episode #462 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont opened with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The 2021 Canadian Football Hall of Fame induction class is unveiled!, 2) The CFL is in talks with the Federal government about funding for a 2021 season (the hosts give it a 50/50 shot), 3) Monday’s NHL trade deadline leftovers, 4) The Pats are 0-1 in the post-Connor Bedard era after a 3-1 loss to Winnipeg, and face Prince Albert Tuesday at 8:00 pm in the Dub Hub, 5) The Jays fall 3-1 to the NY Yankees, and 6) TSN 1050 Toronto’s 10-year anniversary Twitter post excludes the Argonauts, and they are the voice of the team. The post featured a Raptor, Leaf, Toronto FC player, Blue Jay and Tom Brady (Dupes figures this is more of a CFL problem than a TSN problem). The post was later deleted and re-posted with an Argo added in place of Tom Brady.
- Vegas Golden Knights Insider and long-time TSN CFL Insider Gary Lawless joined the show from the Knights practice facility and defended TSN Radio for its Tweet. Gary said you’ve got to go with what the listeners want. On the state of the CFL, Gary reiterated that the league is on track for a merger with the XFL but doesn’t buy Rod’s MLSE-taking-over story. RP said he stands by his sources and has been doubted before, only to be proven right. Regarding Vegas acquiring Mattias Janmark from Chicago at the deadline, Lawless said he’ll slot in on the third line at left wing. He reported the Golden Knights were never “in” on Taylor Hall nor Ryan Getzlaf due to salary reasons.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: After the NHL trade deadline, which Canadian team is the country’s best Stanley Cup contender? At press time, the Leafs were winning.
- News broke during the show that the CHL has cancelled the 2021 Memorial Cup for a second straight season. Rod said it’s devastating but how could it be a surprise? The OHL hasn’t played all year and teams can’t leave the province to play.
- In Hour 2’s Second Half Kickoff we were joined by new Canadian Football Hall of Famer Nik Lewis. Nik said it means more that he was a first-ballot selection and recounted stories from his time with the Calgary Stampeders. He said he was lucky to survive his rookie season in 2004 given all the chaos with the franchise at the time. We were later joined by Nik’s business partner Gerald Smiley, a former Texas Rangers draft pick, whose company Chip-In is a big part of Nik’s new digital broadcast platform A-O Sports. It’s a broadcast form of The Players Tribune, where players tell their own stories. In A-O’s case, the athletes will host their own podcasts and listeners will subscribe to listen.

- See you at 10 am MT/12 pm ET on Wednesday on YouTube/Facebook Live! We are pre-empted on Game+ for the rest of the week due to an E-Sports tournament on the network.

Nik Lewis and Gerald Smiley may be onto something. I’m glad the player’s are telling their stories as it appears nobody else will. In the past year former XFL Houston Roughneck Nick Holley signed with the Stampeders. When the XFL rebranded “For Love of The Game” he was featured. The man came back from a broken back to play football. I haven’t heard a peep out of Calgary talking about him or anyone on that roster as a human interest story. Has anyone seen Last Chance U? Season one at EMCC Roland Ollie has signed with the Toronto Argonauts. This… Read more »
