FLAME TECH FOOTBALL FRIDAY RUNDOWN: SLURPEE TAKEOVER AND CFL TALK!

Fridays are reserved for the gridiron and we tackled the latest in the CFL, plus took a detour into a deep Slurpee discussion, on Episode #529 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow! Read on for the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont kicked it off with The Warmup for EECOL Electric covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) CFL Covid testing produced 10 positive results in pre-training camp testing, 2) Saints DL and Roughrider property David Onyemata will be suspended for a portion of the 2021 NFL season due to a positive banned substance test, 3) The Argos are “impatient” while awaiting WR Martavis Bryant’s arrival, 4) NHL protected lists for the Seattle expansion draft will be unveiled on Saturday, 5) The boys gave their outlook for the Blue Jays in the second half, and 6) CEBL talk. The boys will be at Sasktel Centre Friday night for Rattlers/Nighthawks! Tip-off is 7 pm MT on CBC Gem & Twitch.
  • Rod discussed Roughriders training camp and said the report he got on a quarterback ranking looks like this: 1) Cody Fajardo, 2) Isaac Harker, 3A) Mason Fine, 3B) Paxton Lynch and 4) Tom Flacco.
  • Ottawa RedBlacks play-by-play man A.J. Jakubec joined the show from the Canadian Premier League bubble in Winnipeg to discuss the CFL. He admitted that not much is expected from Ottawa following a 3-15 campaign but he’s enthusiastic about their chances with new QB Matt Nichols and Head Coach Paul Lapolice. He revealed with regards to the departed Rick Campbell staff, both sides felt it was “time for a change”. A.J. admitted it’ll be tough to overcome the retirements of starting Canadians such as Brad Sinopoli and Alex Mateas. He also discussed the CFL’s Battle of Ontario and said he wished the rivalry between the RedBlacks and Argonauts was more heated.
  • Winnipeg is known as the Slurpee Capital and the discussion veered off into our favourite flavours. Rod’s is Dr. Pepper and said “it’s a hill I’m prepared to die on!” Moose’s is Cream Soda. Viewers chimed in with their faves from all across the continent and the discussion highjacked the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll. The question became – What’s the best Slurpee flavour – Coke, Cream Soda, Dr. Pepper or Other? 7/11 Canada was watching and promoted the poll. At press time, Coke was leading.
  • In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff for the Four Season Sports Palace we talked a lot more about Slurpees, the Covid outbreaks in MLB and Olympic basketball pre-tournament play, the fact that some NFL teams have less than 50% of players fully-vaccinated, and how this affects the CFL? Rod chirped that he’d rather discuss Slurpees.
  • Leader Post columnist Rob Vanstone joined the show from the Mosaic Stadium press box for a report from Day 7 of Rider training camp. He doesn’t necessarily agree with Rod’s QB ranking, saying rookie Tom Flacco has been very impressive. However he admitted that Cody Fajardo is head and shoulders above the rest. Regarding Covid’s affect on CFL training camps, R.V. stated that you wouldn’t really notice a difference from other years and that preseason games are overrated.
  • The final two segments were devoted to Viewer Takeover however RP and Dupes Faced Off on the Blue Jays’ second half chances. Darren predicted 45 wins and that they’ll capture the pennant. Rod disagreed, saying they won’t win as many but will claim a wildcard spot. The Face Off is presented by UFZ Moose Jaw and The Mad Greek Restaurant.
