TUESDAY COMMENTARY – OKAY BLUE JAYS

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

IT’S VERY SPECIAL WHEN YOU CAN IDENTIFY HISTORY IN THE MAKING, AND TRULY ENJOY IT.

THAT’S WHAT WE’RE SEEING WITH THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS, AND THE ENTIRE COUNTRY HAS TAKEN NOTICE.

CANADA’S BASEBALL TEAM HAS MUSCLED THEIR WAY INTO A TIE FOR FIRST-PLACE ATOP THE AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST LESS THAN A WEEK INTO THE SEASON.

WILL THE JAYS AND RAYS BATTLE NECK-AND-NECK FOR TOP SPOT OVER THE ENTIRE 162-GAME SCHEDULE?

MAYBE NOT TAMPA, BUT IT SURE FEELS LIKE TORONTO WILL.

AND AFTER WATCHING MONDAY NIGHT’S 3-0 BLUE JAYS VICTORY AT YANKEE STADIUM, THE THOUGHT POPPED INTO MY HEAD “THESE AREN’T ‘THE KIDS’ ANYMORE”.

THEY’RE A VETERAN BALL CLUB, EVEN IF THE CORE IS IN THEIR MID-20’S.

OUTFIELDER GEORGE SPRINGER LED THE WAY IN GAME ONE AGAINST NEW YORK, HOMERING ONCE. AT AGE 32 AND WITH WORLD SERIES EXPERIENCE, HE’S THE PERFECT LEADER FOR THIS TEAM.

NEWCOMER AT THIRD BASE MATT CHAPMAN SAID HE IMMEDIATELY FELT WELCOME BY THIS LOCKER ROOM, AND FELT LIKE HE’S KNOWN HIS NEW TEAMMATES FOR YEARS.

THAT’S CHEMISTRY.

AND THE JAYS HAVE JUST THE RIGHT SPRINKLING OF LOCAL FLAVOUR, WITH MARKHAM, ONTARIO’S JORDAN ROMANO SETTING A CLUB RECORD WITH HIS 26THCONSECUTIVE SAVE ON MONDAY.

IT WAS TORONTO’S FIFTH STRAIGHT VICTORY AT YANKEE STADIUM AND THEY’LL GO FOR NUMBER SIX ON TUESDAY NIGHT.

2015 AND ’16 WERE EXCITING AND I WAS HAPPY TO BE IN ROGERS CENTRE TO SEE THE BANNER UNVEILED. BUT THAT WAS A DIFFERENT TEAM.

LONG GONE ARE JOHN GIBBONS, JOSH DONALDSON, JOSE BAUTISTA, KEVIN PILLAR AND EDWIN ENCARNACIAN.

NO, THIS IS A NEW TEAM WITH A NEW OPPORTUNITY.

OKAY BLUE JAYS. LET’S PLAY BALL.
